  • Claying Question

My dad's work truck is a black '95 Nissan pick-up, with a VERY neglected finish.
So today I tried to give it some love, and started by claying it, some parts, like the quarter panels came out really dirty, but on the hood and roof the clay came out clean(er).
The weird thing is that while the quarter panels feel smooth, the roof still feels rough to the touch....what gives???
What would cause this, could it be the way the car was painted?
BTW, I believe it was re-painted before he bought it.

Can you SEE anything in the paint (as in trapped contamination under layers of paint)? With enough in there, it can make a finish feel gritty.

    Dirt In Paint

This recent thread shows some pictures of such contamination in a finish. Improper prep before painting or between topcoats can cause this.

      WOW!!! That was fast Pete!

I know what you're talking about, but usually those particles are "bigger" and more noticeable, like the pictures in the link. This particular paint feels like it's been hit with overspray. Y'know, rough, but not grainy.
Maybe the consumer clay (white) isn't strong enough?

        Ahh, OK

I've never used the current Quik Clay. I use the Professional Line Mild and Aggressive clays. Are you pulling anything from the roof when you use the Quik Clay?

Aggressive is great for heavy overspray, such as when a body shop forgets to mask the car when painting

Also, have you tried any paint cleaner on a portion of this roughness?

No, not really, just a little darker.

          That is my feeling.

As in DC step 1, or more like ScratchX?

On the paint cleaner, I just wondered if you were using it on the rough area to see if you pulled any more material off than you did with the clay. ScratchX would be a good one since it does have some abrasive to potentially remove some of the contamination.

If it was mine and I was confident it wasn't the paint failing, I'd use some Aggressive Clay from the Professional line. After using this product, be prepared to remove some of the marks it may well leave behind.

I will try with the ScratchX, and see what happens.

On a side note, this truck is going to be my test bed, when I get my PC in a month or so, to polish my skills.

Thanks for all the advice Pete.

              Later,
