  • Question regarding PC DA polisher...

    Hello,

Just one week ago, I tried to remove some swirls from my almost newly painted car with #80 and a 8006 pad and it made no improvement at all. I confirmed that it is not my technique but rather that the paint is very hard.

    Here is my question:

People say you need BOTH a PC and a Rotary Buffer since you need the PC for the last steps after using the Rotary. However, I don't understand this, because #80 is considered a finishing product since it is not very aggressive, yet it didn't do anything for my paint with the PC. I only apply my LSPs by hand, so my question is, why should I keep the PC? I don't see any real reason to do so. I know a Rotary can put swirls into the paint, but I don't see how it would do this if I am using a 9006 finishing pad and a very mild product.

Can someone please clarify some of this for me. I am very confused at the moment.

    Thanks.

    Hey,

    I will try to clarify...

The rotary buffer is a very different animal than the PC. Even with a Finishing Pad and a mild cleaner/polish like #80, rotary buffer holograms are still quite possible, and in most cases, quite likely. So while the rotary can correct finishes that the PC can not, the DA action of the PC allows it to remove most if not all of the holograms instilled by the rotary.

Therefore, if you use a rotary, it would IMO be wise to use the PC afterwards to bring the finish to its maximum potential!

I was talking about the PC I would like to sell. I am really confused now because the #80 did nothing with the PC.

ya the PC is a good tool to have even if it doesn't remove your swirls. I think if you are going to buy a rotary you still need a PC. Also have you tried M83? then follow that up with M80.

According to Meguiar's M80 is more aggresive than M82 but i find that M82 does a better job making swirls dissapear??? this may be because i am just filling swirls but it's a good temp. fix

After re-reading this post, I zeroed in on this line. How new is the paint, exactly?

Some people will report that M80 causes some marring on very fresh, soft finishes.

Ignoring technique or product mixing issues, the fact that the finish might not be at its hardest could be causing issues for you.

I had the car painted about 6 months ago. My issue is not with the finish being soft, but rather with it being hard. I have not tried #83 yet, so I may give it a shot but I just feel that the PC isn't cutting it.

Another question...are these swirls on the finsh that you're trying to remove from running a rotary (holograms or worse) or are they the fine type of spiderweb/hazing that we see from improper washing or wiping technique?

M80 on a DA will often times not put a dent in deep rotary marks left by, say, a very strong compound.

Just another angle on the issue

That is an interesting point you bring up. I know that when I had picked up the car from the body shop, I could already see some swirls in the sun. I am not sure if this was due to them washing it with a poor quality wash mitt or if they didn't correctly buff out all their rotary buffer marks.
