  • Bonnet over a W7006 Cutting Pad?

    Hi!

I would like to remove wax by placing a microfiber bonnet on my Meguiar's G104 Cordless Buffer. I've heard that it's a good idea to place the bonnet over a Meguiar's W7006 Pad or a wool pad (like they sell at autogeek.net).

    Three questions:
    1. Does this combination keep the bonnet from flying off the pad or provide an extra padding between the buffer and the surface of the vehicle?
    2. Would this setup bog down the G104?
    3. Any other recommendations?

    Thanks in advance!

You never remove wax with a cutting pad of any type, you remove wax with a bonnet placed over[/i] a foam pad.

We recommend the cutting pad for this because the extra stiffness lends itself to helping to remove the wax. Just do an experiment sometime with different foam pads with bonnets placed over them and we're sure you'll come to the same conclusion.

The cordless polisher won't have enough power to remove the wax effectively because you have to push down against the finish in order to get the wax off.

If you want to remove swirls and remove wax by machine, then you need to step up to the plug-in model.

I would use a plug-in model however, I live in an apartment building where I have no access to electricity. I've been using the G104 to apply cleaners and waxes and it's been doing a wonderful job. It's really easy and since my car is brand new, I have no defects on the finish whatsoever.

I asked about using a bonnet over the pad because I'm still removing cleaners and waxes by hand. Boy, do my arms and shoulders hurt! Anyhow, I figured this could further simplify my waxing routine. I'll go ahead and try it and I'll post an update.

One last thing, in the past I've used the following products: #16, Medallion Premium Paint Protectant, and #21. Lately I've been using ColorX and man, this stuff is great! On a new vehicle, do you think using ColorX is a bad choice?

      Thanks!

ColorX is perfectly safe for new cars and paint in excellent condition, it won't hurt anything and it will leave a great looking, protected finish.

As for removing wax with a bonnet on the G104 Cordless Polisher, as long as you are applying a nice thin coat, of all the waxes you mentioned except for the M16 Professional Paste Wax, this should work.

FWIW, I get much better results using bonnets over foam pads (especially ones like the 7006) than I do over wool pads. The wool tends to compress over time and offer less cushioning. Wool pads aren't all the same, but in my experience the cutting pads are the way to go for this.
