  • Newbie with an IROC

    Hello all

I am taking delivery of a 1990 IROC Camaro this week and have a question about products. The car has the original paint and is in excellent condition. It has spent the last ten years mainly covered in a garage. It has about 75,000 miles on it. The color is medium blue. My question is, what type of paint is on this car and does it have clear coat? Also, I know that GM's paint quality in the past was not all that outstanding, what specific products would you guys recommend for this car? I did the online Rx which was very helpful but I don't know if it factored in the specific car/paint. I just don't want to mess up 16 year paint that looks good at the moment but I'm sure could look better.

    TIA for any help!

    Hey Hutch,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

Firstly, the odds are is that it is BC/CC paint. Just to check, take a piece of cloth with some ScratchX on it, and work into the finish. If it pulls color (this case blue), then it is Single Stage paint.

Here is Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle which explains the suggested steps of taking care of a vehicle's paint:

    Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle

    Step 1 Wash

    Step 2 Clean

    Step 3 Polish

    Step 4 Protect

    Step 5 Maintain

    Give that a read!!

Will you be doing the work by hand or by the G100 DA Polisher?

The paint should be base coat/clear coat as Tim said. I had a 1986 red Iroc and it was bccc paint. It is a great car, good choice!

        From Meguiar's *NEW* FAQ

Here's the link, below is the answer,

How can I tell if I have a clear coat finish?

To determine whether you have a clear coat or a single-stage finish perform this simple test.
        • * Find an inconspicuous area to test, such as the lower rear quarter panel of your car's fender or inside the door jamb.

          * Clean this area first with car wash and water or Meguiar's Quik Detailer. You don't want any dirt or grime to interfere with your test.

          * Using a small piece of white cotton, such as a piece of terry cloth towel, rub a little paint cleaner or Cleaner/Wax into the paint of this inconspicuous area.

          * After rubbing for a few moments, turn your cloth toward you and look to see if there is any color from your paint on the cloth.

If you have a red car and you now have red paint residue on your cloth, this is a pretty good indicator that you have a single stage finish. If you have a red car and you don't see any red paint residue on your cloth, this is a pretty good indicator that you have a clear coat.

To be 100% sure, you should test in a couple of different areas.

Note: If you have a white, or very light colored car you should use a dark piece of cotton cloth and look for the color of your car's finish on it after rubbing some paint cleaner or Cleaner/Wax into the finish for a few moments.

Thanks for the feedback. I need to really inspect the car to see if it needs anything at this point. I plan to stock up on some Meg products this week to tackle our other cars. I have a 2001 Crown Vic P71 (Black) and a 2001 Chrysler Voyager (Med Red). I plan on buying a PC this week as well.
