  • Broke out some new Bonnets yesterday.

Yesterday, I had to go into the box of extra goodies and open up a new pack of GC bonnets as I had 6 dirty ones in the dirty rag bucket.

I have been using the same 6 six bonnets now over and over with regular washing since having gotten bitten by the detailing bug last summer.

They are getting a liittle worn but they degrade at such a slow rate that you reallly don't see a difference from one waxing to the next.

But yesterday, and tonight, when I put the new bonnets to work, I immediatey saw what a difference a brand new bonnet makes when pullling wax off with the PC. The moment I got started I was catching reflections off my paint that I forget I could get.

I imagine I'll still keep the old bonnets around a bit longer since I am so cheap. But it's nice to know that on those days when I have the time and am just waxing because I enjoy it, I can pull out some good bonnets and get a little extra pop out of them.

I just figured this might be worth putting out for those of us reasonably new to the hobby to keep in mind that things do wear out and degrade in performance over time, especially with the usage that some of us nuts put them though. So be watchful about using things for long periods of time. It may not necessarily cause you problems, but you might not be getting the results you are capable of either.

Just something I felt worth noting.

Jeff, I too really caught the bug last May when I bought my first new black car...before then, didn't know anything about clay, 5 step process etc etc etc...without this forum, who knows, I'd still be using $3.00 wax from some other manufacturer...I've always loved a clean car ever since I owned my first one over 30 years ago but never knew there was so much to this...didn't have the internet back then

Good tip on the bonnets...I just ordered some more myself on Saturday since it's supposed to be 50 degrees here on Friday so I hope to get in a pre spring detail on Saturday !

With wear, I notice it is much more likely to take me 2-3 bonnets to pull of my wax. But fresh bonnet gets it all with just one. I am to cheap to throw the older ones out just yet, I might get my initial spring workup done here in a few weeks then put them alltogether in a baggie and keep them to the side for any "beater" work I get myslef into.

For me, I got into this when I bought this new Honda Ridgeline last Jume. I wanted to take extra special care of it and stumbled in here and got hooked. I took it up as my primary hobby and never looked back.
