  • Does Meg. make pads for buffers other than the PC

I'm doing my first car (thats not mine) soon. I have decieded to stick with meguairs. I need to order some polish and pads, but for right now I am stuck using a traditional D/A that my dad gave me for Christmas. If all Meg. pads are velcro (which will not work with my D/A) where can I get some foam pads. The bonnets supplied are a fine cloth polishing bonnet and a wool "wax" bonnet.

So can I use the wool bonnet for more agressive cutting, such as with 83. Also what about the fine polishing bonnet.

Also does anybody make pads that slip on like a traditional D/A.

    Thanks

Allow me to be the first...

Your traditional D/A has no value.

Hence, manufacturers do not market accessories for the traditional D/A.

It doesn't accomplish anything. Don't waste your valuable time.

I meant for this to be concise and clear.

    Sorry, but

      why?

It spins at 1400 rpms, and I can put pressure on it, so it seems to me it would work.

I don’t know what you mean by “traditional D/A” but here’s a link comparing certain types of buffers: Rotary vs PC vs Regular Orbital Buffer

Meg’s does make pads for pneumatic DA buffers and of course the Velcro pads also work with them when using Velcro backing plates but I’m guessing that’s not what we’re talking about here.

Do know the make, model or size?

I can't post a picture, but I could probably post a link to one. I'm at work now (Internet is screwed at my house) so I will have to wait to tommarrow to post it though.

Its just a regular orbital buffer, like a black and decker or something. I can buy velcro backing plate for it? Sorry guys, kinda of new to some aspects of this.

Nothing to be sorry about, that's why we're all here, to share this stuff.

As far as I know nobody makes Velcro backing plates for them. Even if they did the machines are too slow and lack power to correct defects.

Still, they can save your arms when applying and removing products that only need to be “spread around” like waxes. I’ve heard of guys gluing Velcro onto their machines so the can use pads.

Meguiar’s figured that since people had them they might as well be put to some use so they came up with these:

              Gold Class Foam Finishing Bonnet

Gold Class Clear Coat Safe Microfiber Bonnets

              PC.

                Hi,

Does anyone use a Random Orbital Sander with a buffing pad on their cars? I have a Bosch ROS, and it's a great sander, i'm wondering if it can be used to remove swirls from my car (with the appropriate velcro pad and meguiar's product), or if there is any advantage in going for a G100.

Being in Australia, we don't get the G100's over here. I can import one, but it gets quite costly, but if there is a clear advantage in using a G100 over a OS, then i'll do it.

                Thanks for any advice

                Regards

                John

The G100 is just a sander as well. I can't see why it would be any better than any other sander
I have a Cyclo myself and it works great IMHO.

Some sanders, like the G100 (Porter-Cable), will work for both sanding and polishing. Others are designed around certain kinds of sanding tasks and don't lend themselves to polishing.

The key performance factors for a machine are its power, speed and orbit radius. Without enough power you can't work the product sufficiently. Too slow or too small an orbit won't make progress, to fast and you'll shred the foam pads.

The G100 has a good combination of the three for polishing. There are other sander/polishers that can also work well but there are a lot of sanders that won't.

Whether your Bosch has the potential depends on its characteristics. Which model is it?

Since we have many members outside of the US the subject comes up often. If you search around the Forum you'll find some discussions. The Cyclo is one popular choice. Also worth considering are Festo, Makita, Rupes, Flex and others.

It’s a little down on power compared to the G100 but has significantly more than many cheap buffers and sanders. The orbit radius is a little less too but again, still bigger than many sanders’. Speed wise, it’s much faster than the G100, too fast if you dial it up so start with it at the slowest setting and be very careful about turning it from there.

The 125mm backing plate should work fine with most pads.

I think it should work reasonably well. You have nothing to loose by trying it. Get some pads and give it a shot.
