  • First time with G100 - Questions about 83/80 issues.. GAH!

alright, finally took the jump and ordered a g100 and some 83 + 80. if youve read any of my other threads, i have a white 01 mustang gt with a ton of swirls in the paint. i was hoping the 83 + 80 combo with the g100 was just what i needed to get it taken care of...

so, i took my 8006 pads, marked them with their use for each of the aforementioned product, cleaned off my spoiler (i figured it would be a good testing area) and went at it with the 83.

however, it didnt work as well as id have liked.

i used an 8006 pad, xed on some 83, dabbed it on the spoiler from the pad, switched the g100 to 5, and went at it... and went at it... and went at it... i did about 3 passes with 83, only getting about 80% of the swirls out. so then i went with two passes of 80... not a whole lot better. then for kicks, i used the dc# 1,2 combo, and topped it off with some nxt to see what it would look like tomorrow.

i was quite frustrated with the whole thing. while it definitely got out a good deal of the swirls, it wasnt perfect, and im a perfectionist.

i noticed a couple things that may be things i am doing wrong.

1.) the pad seemed to fling a bunch of dried product all over the place once i started working. does this mean i am working too long/too hard with the product? i couldnt imagine having to remove all of it afterwords, i think youd have to wash it again.

2.) about how long do you have to work it before the abrasives are worked in? i tried to go for about 2-3 mins, but that seemed too long (i was just working on the top of the spoiler, mind you, to give you an idea of the area i was working on) and once i noticed that dried stuff that was appearing on the trunk lid, i figured i was doing something wrong.

3.) is there anything i can do to try and get the 20% of swirls left with the products i have? i noticed in a previous thread that mike had mentioned going from 83 with an 8006 to 83 with a 9006 and then back, or something in that fashion. someting about more bite.

i know that it may be a lost cause and that i may not be able to get all the swirls out, but i was really hoping this would give me that mirror like finished i so wanted.

could it be that i was using it on a plastic area (i would assume the spoiler was plastic) and that is why the swirls were so difficult?

anything you guys would suggest would be appreciated. i do however, thank you all for the time youve put into my previous questions to get me to this point.

Make sure you press the pad to the paint, and then turn it on, and then turn it off before lifting it. If you don't, it will not only sling product, it may even sling the pad.

You work the product while it's wet only, once it looks like it's drying, add more product or wipe it off, have a look and then do it again if it needs it. At most, 15-20 seconds at a time. 2-3 minutes, that's insane.

Mustangs have hard paint, I know, had one for years. It's a good candidate for a rotary buffer but if you got 80% of with a PC buffer, you are doing good. Use a good wax to cover the swirls, for white I like #16, someday they'll bring it back, if note NXT Tech Wax works the best on our Mustang. Also, it could be that the 20% you speak of is swirls you are putting in there yourself from over polishing with a dry pad.

hmmm... i thought i saw that 2-3 min recommendation on here somewhere. ill definitely get out of that routine. i too had the thought about it maybe instilling swirls itself. also, keep in mind i was working the entire length of the spoiler, so we're talking 2-3 mins for about a 2-3ft area

the product it slung was dried, not wet, so maybe i was definitely working it too long.

also, how much product is enough? my other fear was not enough product so i wouldnt get any cutting action.

        Have you seen this post:

Using the G-100 to remove swirls, scratches and etchings...

Great reading #80 and #83 are highlighted.

Now I have not used #83 but for #80 I work it in for 1.5-2 min in a 2X2 area once you get use to it you will know when its time to remove but it may take a few tries.

How much product.... once the pad is primed it doesn't take all that much. If you apply to much it can be hard to remove. You don't want to buff the product till its dry. Remove wet.

Polishes can be hard to remove once dry and may leave smears and such. If this happens I re-wet the dry area with more polish and remove.

Now this is not the case for waxes, apply the entire vehicle let the wax dry per the instructions then remove.

yeah, it was difficult to remove. i thought maybe that was just part of the process. this information will go a long way however.
