  • New Paint Job

I own a Miata and just had a complete new paint job done on it. How soon can I give it the three step wax process?

Assuming it was baked: Minimum- one month. Optimal- up to three months. I always wait at least three myself just to make sure it finishes outgassing and thus attains maximum potential hardness.

In the meantime, you can use the second step of the three-step system. Deep Crystal Step #2 is a great product for fresh paint and will provide some looks and (minimal) protection. You will have to reapply after every wash though. Othe choices include #5/#3/#81/#7 (in order of my preference) or #80 if it needs correction.

You'll want to wait 3 months if you are going to be doing it yourself.

As was mentioned, you can use #80 to polish and add some protection in the meantime.

Yeah, all the baking really seems to do is slightly lessen the outgassing time. It's just like the difference between a car painted in the NE during winter and a car painted in the SW during summer. The paint in the hot climate will cure faster.

Watch it with the #80 if the paint is very fresh, the initial cut might be a little more than you'd expect while the paint is fresh-from-the-gun soft. A few weeks can make a noticeable difference.
