  • upcoming detail with g100... advice please!! Thanks :]

    Hey everyone,

I have taken the Meguiar's detailing class held by Mike Phillips and learned quite a bit.... here's the thing. I will be getting my G100 on thursday with some #80 speed glaze and some nxt tech wax. I have a detail to do thursday night for someone I don't know and would like to use the G100 but this would be my first time using it!! Do you think I should be ok using it after watching Mike demonstrate it at his class? I really don't want to go there and screw this guys car up..... it seemed pretty easy to use the g100 though. The car i'm detailing is a '04 Acura TL grey color. I was planning on washing it, claying it, using the g100 with #80 and then using tech wax...... any thoughts comments or suggestions would sure be appreciated! Thanks a lot everyone.

i think you should be fine with the DA ... if i can use it anyone can but if you want to be safe try it on your own car first to get a feel for the machine

but i'd rather screw up his car before my car!!!! ;] hahaha j/k but yeah... i have a feeling i should get the hang of it real fast.. i'll do the hood in about 4 sections, the roof in 4 sections... the doors in 2 sections.... the fenders in 2 sections, the trunk lid in 2 sections and same goes for the rear.... i should be good. thanks for the reply...that makes me feel better. Just need some people to tell me i'll be fine :]

Just remember, if you are nervous, you dont need to start in the middle of your hood. Feel free to start down on a back fender.

but it does have to be pretty difficult to screw up a car using #80 and the g100 right? seems like it would take some really dramatic error to mess a cars paint up using the two combined.... am i right about that??

About the only bad thing you can do is drop the G-100 on your car.

Even if you happen to dry buff a little by accident, it is easily fixable with another pass with proper technique.

But sometimes starting out of the way can calm the nerves....

perfect..... all the words i was hoping to hear! :] i will use it on his car and will take my camera.... hopefully there is sufficient light in his garage for a good shot since it will be at night when i'm doing this detail..... i'm charging the guy 85 bux.... what do you think about the price? probably a little cheap but then again it's good practice and i'll have a little extra cash...

Price depends on your market. Since I dont own a business, and I detail to poor students, I only charge $50-100 (usually a $50 wash + colorX entire car with g-100 w/ w8006 on speed 5 + Gold Class wax applied with w9006 at speed 3).

When I first used my g-100 w/ M80 and M83, I didnt see much of a difference in my finish. It took me about an hour or so to figure out the best technique. Now I'm pretty confident in what I can do with the G-100 now.

i actually did my car a few hours ago with ColourX it removed all the cobwebbing so i didn't have to go over the car with ScratchX! then i did gold class on 3.5 -isn't 3.5 the right speed for gold class?

I myself use speed 3, but I couldnt see the harm in running it at a slightly higher speed, since the g-100 with a w9006 pad is so gentle.

don't forget to do slow passes (side to side / up & down / horizontal) with a fair/good amount of pressure.
