  • Detailing Success

    Hello again,

Sorry it took me so long to post the results of using clay to remove the stubborn Gel-Coat overspray from my Truck's paint surface.

After posting my SOS I took the advise of the experienced dealing with this type of disaster and found it to be very useful.

After washing and drying my Truck I started early in the morning to start the long task of using the Meguiars Quick Detailing Clay System. Taking small areas as suggested, working diligently, I found that the clay was actually removing the Gel-Coat and any other substance bonded to the paints surface. I have to tell you this was no easy task, as it took me 8 1/2 hours to completely remove all of the overspray. Yes it was long but worth the experience. Of course after finishing the claying I used two other processes before applying the finish wax (nxt Tech Wax). I was so impressed with the result I did the same to both the Miata and Mercedes. Our cars never looked better.

My thanks to Meguiars and especially Mike Phillips for the time spend on giving me useful tips.

Here are just a couple of pictures to show what I had to deal with and the final product.

If there are any other suggestions to get an even deeper luster I am open for any input.

    Sincerely,
    Rick

P.S. I can't seem to find the link to add my Photo's, any suggestions?

        Hi Rick,

Thank you for coming back and updating us about your success in removing the gel-coat overspray from you truck and cars. We're so very happy to hear you were able to successfully remove the overspray.

The time you invested in the removal process is a testimony to others that in this day and age of the drive-through mentality, (We want our hamburger and we want it now!), that something do take time and patience but with time, patience and the human elements of care and passion, even the most difficult tasks can be seen through to success.

        Good job!

As for the pictures, this like will explain it all...

How to put pictures into your posts

        p.s.

When I helped a young man to remove the Industrial Strength White Enamel Overspray off his truck, it was a slow process.

Often times we had to do go over the same area multiple time to remove each little dot of white paint.

We've seen other people come to our forum and post/complain that they were unable to remove overspray using detailing clay and my hunch would be their expectations were unreal, that is they thought they should be able to quickly pass the clay bar over the surface and Shazam! the overspray would be gone... In most cases, it doesn't work that way and instead it takes some persistence and perspiration...

I hope this worked. If it does it shows the extent of the gel-coat overspray and finished results. Enjoy

About persistance in removing stubburn bonded contaminants:

Such was the case with my last detail. My mom had great splashes of white paint on the sides of her car. After using plastic razorblades to remove the bulk of the mess, our second task was to clay the rest of it away. At first, it seemed like we were getting nothing done. But after working at it for about an hour, we made very significant headway. Another hour later, almost all the splashed-on paint was gone.

                      Nice vanity plate, BTW.

                        Vanity Plates

Lydia, I hope it works out, as I know it will with patience and elbow grease.

P.S. I had nothing to do with the plates. My wife suprised me one birthday..... I am always saying seeeeeyuh after finishing my conversation with friends and thats how it happened. Seems that when driving around the southland draws attention to those that misinterpret the meaning.... it doesn't mean I want to race!

Also, I should tell you that when I used the Meguiar's Claying System I went through two bottles of Quick Detailer. Keeping the surface wet/slick is very important to keep the clay from transfering to the painted surface.

                        Wishing you well....

                          Pictures and Comments

                          Tim,

Thank you for posting my Pictures. I wished the surface was an even deeper shine. But for a factory paint job this may be the best it will ever be.

As far as the wheel well comment! I must say there is a limit to how far is to far. Detailing the wheel well is somewhat counter productive and a waste of time unless your showing the car.

I hope the pictures will encourage anyone who might have similar problems with paint surface contaminants. If anyone can tell me how to get an even deeper shine I am open for your constructive comments.

                          Have a great day...
