  • Suede?

Ok Guys I just got my car not too long ago and I have black suede. Im not really too sure on what i should use to clean it. If anyone has any suggestions It would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about regular, overall cleaning, but my girlfriend had some suede shoes that she spilled something on. One of her friends told her to go an art supply store and get the softest eraser she could find (not some hard hard pink thing, one of those really smooth, pliable white ones), and rub on the suede to "erase it off" and also re-texture it. I was thoroughly skeptical, to say the least. However, it worked like magic! I was shocked! I think it does what the rotary buffer does...removes the suede to below where the defect lies, creating a new, clean finish
My car's so shiny I can see your car's swirls in its reflection.

        Hey jspeks_gurl

        Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

Suede is a difficult material to clean. You can not get it wet with normal cleaning products as it could create water stains. I would try what danielsan suggested. If that does not work, I would go to a leather shop and ask for a product that cleans suede. Perhaps a dry foaming cleaner. Either way, always do a test spot first in a hidden area to make sure the products do not make it worse.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

Tim, when I had to clean suede, we used a dry foaming type cleaner you mentioned as a last resort.

Normally I'd start with a quick pass with a nylon brush or a simple clean, dry towel.

You're also right about water and water based chemicals....avoid 'em on suede.

          Never tried the eraser...thanks, danielsan.

            Hi Pete,

I agree. Some of the dry foams are pretty strong and will **** the color right out of suede. I use a foam for headliners and even on those, I have to try in a hidden spot first just in case.

Ok guys I finally tested out a couple of things.

First I tried a spot in my back seat that had a couple of water spots. I tried to use the eraser method but I have black suede the eraser left a little bit of white but pretty much got rid of the water spot. After that I tried the other method I just got the meguiars carpet and interior cleaner. I basically just followed the instructions except I only sprayed a little of the cleaner on a towel just enought to make it lightly damp and i just rubbed it on there and got a dry towel and rubbed until it was dry and that worked extremely well.

Great! Glad it worked for you

When you used the eraser, did you lose much of the suede material, or just the dirt/stain? I've never used that before...hadn't heard it until danielsan mentioned it, so I'm curious to know.

Me too! I am curious as well. I may have to pull out a pair of leather shoes and see what happens. I wonder if my wife still has that suede purse?

Actually it didnt remove any of the suede. I was really suprised. It just removed the stain, but it did leave a little white residue from the eraser but that came off with a brush of my hand.

I also experienced the residue with the gf's brown suede, but a really gentle brush got rid of it. I also found that less pressure + more time worked better and left easier to remove residue than vice-versa.

                            Re: Suede?

Was it a kneaded eraser that was used? My dining room chairs have suede and there is a light spot on one of them that maybe I can try this on.
