  • is #80 right for me?

okay ive just purchased a pc machine, my car is a 1991 vw that has original paint, that in my eyes is around 8.5/10 perfect as far as swirls are concerned

so in the spring i want to crack out the pc and take care of these very minor swirls...considering my cars age and the fact its probably seen some action in the past, is #80 right for me

i also find that the clear is rather soft and marks easy

    Hi Steve,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

    First,

"Always use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

    And...

"You never know what you can do until you try"

Meguiar's always teaches people to Evaluate their finish before choosing their products, this includes feeling the paint after washing to check for above surface bonded contaminants and if found then clay the paint first.

Also to inspect for swirls, scratches and oxidation and if discovered, then use the least aggressive product to get the job done. If your first choice doesn't work, you can always substitute a more aggressive product.

M80 is a great product and below is an example of what it can do...

Each one, teach one... Ferrari Fiorano 355 F1 Spider

steveo3002- Nice looking car, the wheels really set off the black monochrome look. Heh heh, I like the Beavis avatar too

I bet you'd be very happy using the #80 with the PC. Unless your paint is *VERY* soft it won't be too aggressive. It's a good learning curve product, just don't use too much and work it until it starts to turn clear/transparent (it starts out green/brown and opaque).

Another, milder product you might try is #9, but it's *awfully* mild.

Yes, I do remember you, that was the class for the American Mid Year Society... that was a fun class!

          How are you doing?

(I'll have to check back later as I'm going offline right now to drive into work)

im doing good thanks mike that funny your day is starting and ours is done

accumulator thanks for your comments..its a rare factory supercharged vw, i imported it from germany

the finish does mark very easily, i seem to remember we used #80 ? at the corvette class..but i feel my finish isnt as swirly as the car at the class

i also have concerns that the paint is 15 years old now and i need to the least abrasive product that gets the job done. i have had a look at the ferrari thread , and mine isnt nowhere near as bad as that

in my eyes its 8.5 out of 10 , and id like to step it up to 9.5 , so i dont need a restoration just a little tickle up

Well, you could always use something like #82 Swirl Free Polish as well, or the #9.

Both are milder than the #80.

If it marks very easily, it can also have the swirls removed easier.

Another thing to consider is even if you find #80 is needed this time, it doesnt have to be in the future. If you keep it in good shape, milder products can be used then for milder touch-ups.

And they can even be applied with milder pads.

And remember to avoid peaks, and sharp corners. Though you dont seem to have much.

are the products shown online anywhere in order of abrasiveness?

i think i may get #80 anyway as it sounds sounds like a good all rounder, and maybe a milder version for future maintenence
