  • Tire Advice

Hi peeps. I need a difinitive answer on tire dressings. Last week I bought four new tires. Before I bought them I did alot of research online at the various tire sites and foruns. Many of the forums recomended not using any type of dressing on tires as it leads to degradation of the rubber and weakening of the sidewall. Silicone being the culprit .The only universally accepted dressing was a product from Mercedes that apparently has no silicone in it. I imagine it would cost a bunch. I've always used tire dressings megs or no-touch and like the look. So whats the scoop. Do they wreck your tires prematurally. Thanks ....

I've certainly never had a tire fall apart from putting dressing on it. I have also never had rubber dry out and crack from putting dressing on it.

If everything that had silicone in it made your tires fall apart, I dont think tires would last very long.

Any and all Meguiar’s tire and rubber care products are good for your tires. Meguiar’s chemists are very knowledgeable and skilled professionals and are dedicated to protecting and enhancing your car.

Meg’s makes Silicone Free Dressing for paint and body shops that have to avoid silicones to prevent adhesion problems when spraying paint, not because silicones have any adverse effects on tires or rubber parts.

There’s a huge amount of misinformation about silicones in car care products out on the web. Mike asked one of the chemists to respond to some of it in this thread: http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...&threadid=7368

If you want to use MB Tire Care I can guarantee you it’s a fine product. Not terribly expensive, about ten bucks a bottle, the part number is BQ 698 0010. And by the way, Meguiar’s makes it.

Actually silicone and rubber team up well.

Some advantages of silicone on rubber are:

            · Ability to repel water and form water tight seals
            · Excellent resistance to oxygen, ozone and sunlight
            · Flexibility
            · Anti-adhesive properties
            · Low chemical reactivity
            · Low toxicity

The most damage to a tire I've ever seen was caused by ozone. If you want to protect rubber put silicone on it and it will last much longer than untreated rubber. Silicone is inert.

Silicones are water repellent, heat stable, and very resistant to chemical attack. They find many uses in oils, greases, and rubberlike materials. Silicone oils are very desirable since they do not decompose at high temperature and do not become viscous. Other silicones are used in hydraulic fluids, electrical insulators and moisture proofing agent in fabrics.

Silicones have a number of medical applications because they are chemically inert.
Silicone polymers are frequently added to rubber to improve its characteristics.

              Hey,

Again, well said the other pc!

Meguiar's would not provide a product that would have a negative effect, especially on the tires, the item that keeps the car on the road.

I have been using Meguiar's products for decades and have never had a tire problem due to dressings or wheel cleaners!
