Cool machine! Festool makes really nice tools. (Now if I can just convince myself to spring for their plunge saw…)
It’s a good idea to tape off everything you don’t want polished or splattered. I wouldn’t lay tape directly on the decals. I’d get some masking paper or plastic sheeting and cut it to fit over the decals then lay the tape only on the sheeting and paint.
Definitely tape off any edges and high points, especially if you’re forced to try the “rotex” mode.
I would probably remove the side handle and just use the palm grip (I use the G-100 that way). I think it feels more balanced that way but you can try it both ways and decide for yourself.
@Murr, me also hope that the machine will be perfect for the job
and that i made the right choice
I was hoping that the products i ordered had arrived today
but it didn't so i am forced to postpone(?) the job to probably
next weekend or so
@the other pc, i think i am going to tape off the delicate parts
of the car and don't take any chances by ruin the finish when
i have to use the rotex mode.
I did some reading about masking off parts of the car that
want to keep clean of splattering product but that does
take some time and some practice. But this car doesn't
have many rubber and vinyl parts at all, but it has more
chroom parts and that's what my question is about:
Do I have to tape them off or can I wipe it off
really easy
Here I have some pic's off the car where you can see some
off this chroom " details ":
And the windows, tires, headlights do I have to take care about to
I really would like some help with this please
I would appreciate it a lot.
One other reason to mask chrome or metal trim is if it has sharp edges that you want to avoid.
The primary reason for masking vinyl, rubber, and plastic is to keep polish from damaging them. These materials will often absorb polish products, leaving you with a lot more work to remove it later. Sometimes, if the rubber and vinyl is very dry, the polish will not come out.
If trim pieces are loose, it is a good idea to remove or mask them so you don't cause damage to them, the polish pad, or the paint surface.
Polish can sling off your pad and onto trim that is several inches or more from where you're working. The same goes for tires and other trim around the vehicle.
