  • Tips Before Claying

Is it true that you should strip the wax off your car before claying?? I have a 74 Nova and ive waxed it numerous times but now i wanna try claying it. So does the old wax have to come off?? Also any tips or products that will clean my vinyl top and make it shiny??

You don't have to remove the wax before claying, in fact claying will remove some or most of the wax, at least the wax sitting on top of the surface.

The most important tip for claying a car is to make 100% sure the car is completely clean and free of any loose contaminants that could potentially lodge into the clay and result in you instilling scratches everywhere you run the clay bar.

Get your car as clean as you can before you start.

Then because claying removes wax, you'll need to re-apply a coat of wax after claying so that you restore the protective barrier-coating over the paint.

I was on a 4wd forum, and some others where they talked about using dawn liquid soap for a wash ONLY when starting a complete strip/polish/wax project.
For normal washing, they use GC wash or NXT

Well, plenty of people use Dawn, etc to wash their cars, and some insist on it before doing a 'complete' detail.

The problem is Dawn strips the oils out of things, just like your hands. It also strips the oils from paint, gaskets, seals, and other rubber things, as well as from the plastic trims, vinyl tops, etc.

Now you might use a polish, and a dressing on these plastic and rubber bits, but I would rather not strip oils and then replace them. I would prefer to add more.

As Mike has said, it might work, but why take a step backward, then forward. Only take steps forward.

A clay bar and a good paint cleaner will remove all the wax anyway, without stripping oils, or taking an ysteps backwards. And if a wax is so good that it still wont come off, great. Give me some more of it.
