  • Waxing my sportbike

I have a 01 Kawasaki Ninja zx7r (its my baby). Just wondering what is the best way to polish and wax all the plastic body parts?

    Hi rayjunior

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

The rule for cleaning, polishing and waxing is you always treat the finish, or the surface, not the underlying material. So help us out here, are these plastic components solid plastic, or are they coated with paint?

How about a picture of what you're working on?

If you name the model and year myself or someone here can even find a generic picture on the web to post so we can all see what you're working on.

Those would be plastic panels with paint and decals on them.

It's important to use good quality products that won't leave white residue along the decal edges. I like #26 Yellow Wax.

If these panels are indeed painted, then you would treat them like paint, that is you can,

        Wash
        Clay
        Clean
        Polish
        Wax

M26 dries clear, but what's important is to remove any left over was residue around the edges of decals by wiping it off gently.

I waxed the tank area mostly since it was painted and tried to stay away from the stickers on the fairings for my old GSX-R. For the reason mentioned before about residue around the stickers. Be cautious of waxing the sides of the tank. It tends to get pretty slick!

On my old man's Harley I waxed the side bags, fenders, and all the chrome. Looked great.

If you're not trying to remove swirls have you tried Honda Polish. It's a great one step that cleans and shines all in one.

For swirls removal on the painted surfaces and waxing I'd say use pretty much the same techniques as per cars. I'm pretty sure all work would have to be done by hand. Pick up some quality applicators and micro fibers.

If the fairings are damaged and not painted (just colored plastic)... Here's a great thread about PlastX and colored plastic. Of course Meguiar's doesn't recommend using the product for that application. I think the back of the bottle says something about for use on clear plastics. Don't quote me.

          Who Knew??

Without seeing a picture or knowing specific problems that's about all I can think of. Good luck and welcome to the board.

I've used a DA polisher with #80 Speed Glaze on my bike, including on the decals. I was careful around the decals, though.

It works well on the areas that can be reached with the polisher.
