Without knowing exactly what you're dealing with it's safest to stay away from both.

A computer screen is a computer screen whether it is on my laptop or my car. It's not glass so I'm not using ammonia. (And you kow what that does to tinted windows.) I know alcohol is bad for my laptop screen so I'll assume it's bad for the car display too. To clean the display screen on my Prius I use what I use to clean the screen of my laptop. A product designed for that purpose.

When you start using products for things outside of what they are specifically designed for you take a chance. I wouldn't take a chance on the screen in my car. It's too expensive to replace if I mess it up.

Speaking of the inside of my car...I stay away from all Armor-all products as they seemed to be bad for the dash and door plastic. I got some Meguiar's interior wipes and will be using them.

And speaking of using products for what they are designed for...I don't wash the car with Dawn dish washing detergent either. I use Meguiar's car shampoo. And I use a Meguiar's microfiber towel, not an old T-shirt.
OK... I thought maybe you had a technically-based response as to why. Obviously common sense tells you to be careful of what you're using for certain purposes, but at the same time there are some products not "designed for the job" that will do an equally good job, if not a better job when used correctly. All of that requires a bit more experience though.

Repeated applications of ammonia and/or alcohol on plastic will turn the screen surface yellow, make it brittle and cause tiny stress cracks to appear.

I'm curious if i can use plasticx to remove etchings on my laptop's screen. They keys from the keyboard, after years of barely touching the screen, have left tiny etchings on the lcd.

The LCD screen is basically a coated piece of optical grade plastic. PlastX would remove the coating and make it shiny. Not a good idea.

Plexus is absolutely awesome for this. No alcohol, no ammonia, non abrasive, and is not petroleum based. It is safe and works well on all types of plastic. They use it on the stealth bombers. In fact it's the only thing they use on the canopy.

I've used the QID on a laptop LCD screen and plastic and it worked great. Just mist a little on a soft MF and wipe.

I agree. I have used Plexus to clean the screen and case of my current and two previous laptops without a problem. One of the reasons I like plexus is the foam when sprayed, which will not run like a liquid product. For a meguiar's product you could try #18, but have never used #18 so I so not know how #18 works.

Now that you mention it my screen needs to be cleaned again.

Just to second what everyone else has been saying...DO NOT use any kind of glass cleaner on any kind of computer screen, LCD or otherwise, since most of them nowadays are coated with anti-glare materials. Alcohol and ammonia break these down and cause awful streaking and other terrible looking things. When I worked IT we'd have to break the arms of secretaries who'd windex their screens.

i must agree with who ever stated the info about turning screens yellow...over time, using an incorrect cleaner will turn the screen yellow...after intensive research online and thru friends...i couldnt get much answers..a few semi pro photographers recommended distilled water 10:1 with rubbing alcohol..i use that with a microfiber and spray on the cloth and wipe ..hope this helps
