  • Just got $250 for X-Mas need a DA

So after a Christmas party today I recieved $250 and I'm looking for a dual action polishier. I only want to spend around $150 at the most. I need all the pads/backing plates etc. I also (if possible) want a really quiet one as I don't want to develop headaches everytime I'm cleaning a car. Someone send me some links as to what I should be looking at.

Also sorry for making so many post

autodetailingsolutions.com/Porter%20Cable%20Specials.htm OR you can go to Lowes and pick up the Porter Cable 7336SP lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=51472-546-7336SP and buy the backing plate & pads from here meguiars.com/?pro-pad/DA-Velcro-Buffing-System [edited for commercial links; 2hotford] or many online vendors.

Allen's advice is spot on. These two suggests were EXACTLY what I was going to recommend. IMO, you can't find a better deal than going with one of these two options (kit from ADS, or the Lowes PC+Meg's backing plate/pad combo). Other sites sell their own kits, but from what I've seen, their Porter Cables are way over-priced and will take you over your budget.

If I may also interject a comment, you definitely want the unit that has been posted, but I'd highly encourage you to purchase the Meguiar's G100A deal. With the G100A, you get a lifetime warranty on everything in the kit, whereas buying direct from Porter Cable, I believe you only get a 3-year warranty. If you end up using your machine alot like I have with mine, you'll find the lifetime warranty to come in handy.

If I had it to do all over again I would go for the Meguiars version, for just that reason.

Actually, I believe its only a one year warranty. Which is another reason to select the G100 over the Porter Cable.

For 96greenmustange-In case you aren't aware, the Meguiar's G100 is simply a Porter Cable 7424/7336 with Meguiar's name on it. You pay a little more, but it comes with a lifetime warranty.

Do the machines break often? You sound like you need the Lifetime Warranty...

They are well built machines, but just like anything if you use it... its going to wear out. I would guess the more common problem may be bearings... just a guess nothing to back it.

They need to start selling vehicles with lifetime warranties!

From what I understand, the machine usually doesn't break. It's the cord that usually fails in one way or another.

Also, because I just realized that the original poster wants a quiet machine and I don't believe anybody has touched on the subject. The Porter Cable/G100 makes a whirling noise like any power tool that rotates quickly would make. However, it also adds somewhat of a rattling noise (thats the best I can describe it). Its enough noise to drain out any music that you may have playing from a radio in your garage, but IMO its not enough of a noise to give you any sort of a headache, even with extended use. If your ears are particularly sensitive, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to use some sort of ear protection, but that is something you'll have to decide once you actually hear the machine.

Good luck with your decision, you will NOT regret purchasing a G100/Porter Cable.

if you are going to use it only a few times a month, it should last a looonnggg time. these machines are built very well, and you shouldn't have any problems as some use them hours on hours, day by day.

Meguiar's sells three pads, each have different purposes:

-Burgandy cutting pad- This is actually not recommended by Meguiar's for use with a G100. However, if you are competent enough with its use and you need some heavy cutting power without resorting to rotary use, then you can use this pad with
#83 to achieve the heaviest cutting action available for the G100. I have never used one of these on my PC yet, only the rotary. When you use this pad to apply product, you set it to speed 5 (or even 6, but not recommended by Meguiar's).

-Yellow polishing pad- This is your general purpose pad. I use these more than any other pad. Use it for paint cleaners, abrasive polishes, etc. Most 'normal' defects can be remvoed with a yellow pad and #80 or #83 (if you use it correctly). When you use this pad to apply product, you set it to speed 5 (or even 6, but not recommended by Meguiar's).

-Tan finishing pad- This is used for waxes and pure polishes only. Set the PC to speed 3-4.

Remember- One product per pad. You need at least one pad for every different product you plan to use with the G100, and ideally you'll have a couple extra.
