On another forum someone asked about waxes, and someon responded with this:

Liquid vs spray on vs paste. Simple truth here. Paste waxes are the best period. Liquid waxes while easier to apply and remove just do not protect as well. They are not as durable as a good quality paste wax. They were invented, along with the spray on waxes/polishes, because people don't like the effort required to use a quality paste wax. They are good but paste is the best. The spray on stuff however is useless and is nothing more then a detailers tool or car show tool.

I asked him to provide some evidence for these claims, but so far he has not responded. Can someone confirm or deny what he is saying. I have a feeling that he's full of it, but I need to know for sure. I just want to stop the spread of misinformation (if that is in fact what it is).

As far as I know, there are liquid synthetic waxes (sealants) that last longer than paste carnauba waxes. It doesn't last longer because it is paste, liquid or spray. It lasts longer because of the material used to make the wax/sealant.

I believe the specific issue here is whether or not the paste version of a wax is better, worse, or equivalent to the liquid version.

Hey,

There is no difference, besides the obvious, between Meguiar's liquid and paste versions of the same product. They both have the same durability with the liquid having an advantage in application and removal. Otherwise, there is no difference at all. It comes down to personal preference of what a person prefers to work with: a liquid or a paste wax.

Alright, thanks guys. Thats exactly what I was thinking, but when someone makes statements like that they obviously believe themselves to be some sort of 'authority' on the subject, I had to make sure I was correct in trying to clear up the misinformation.

Sounds to me like someone who doesn't TRULY care about/for their vehicles. I think I would advise him that spray waxes (not to be confused with QD sprays) do have their place in a regular maintenance regimine. For example, during the "good weather" months I usually QD my vehicles every day, wash weekly, and apply a spray wax after each wash. Then, a full coat of wax monthy... etc. etc.

As for spray-on waxes, these types of products have their place in the detailing world, for example I really like to use a spray on wax to restore that just waxes look quickly to a car that is already in excellent condition that has been previously polished and waxed.

To discount a spray-on wax is either merely this other person's opinion, (which they're entitled to), or a lack of knowledge on the product and how and why it is to be used, (usually not their fault as I have personally never found any information on the proper use of a spray on wax on any other forum or in any detailing how-to book, DVD or Video )

No big deal, I meet a lot of people that don't know how to use a spray wax, nor when or why... Not to mention getting great results using a spray-on wax is very technique dependent.
