  • My first post. I just finished a months

work or rubbing from a heavy cut to a light cut on my 1979 dark metallic blue Aston Martin. After reading several posts I purchased a couple of cans of NXT paste wax. I do have a couple of questions, though. Should I put the paste wax on now or is there another product that should be applied first. Also, how many layers of wax can I put on. I have never used this product before. I would like to put at least 5 layers on and maybe more.
BTW, I was told by many "experts" that the paint was to badly damaged and would have to be repainted. It took a long time and a lot of work, but, the paint looks perfect now and the amount of paint loss was negligible. A lot of it has to do with the great painting by done by Aston Martin.

      Hi Randy,

      Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

The most wax you want to apply during any one detailing session is generally 2 well applied and worked in applications and allow each application to fully dry before removing it.

Like Jeff, I'm curious as to what products did you use to prep the paint, as is what was your heavy cut product and what was your light cut product?

Also how did you apply them?

Lastly, a lot of people will apply either a cleaner/polish or a pure polish to the paint before applying their wax to bring out the full clarity, richness of color and reflectivity and gloss.

Here are a few things to look over. I have not used either of those cleaners as yet but I would be willing to bet that some of the folks here who are more familiar are going to suggest you hit it again with a product like #80 then possibly a pure polish. In the meantime here are a few links for you to use to get familiar with some of the choices ahead.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses. I used my Cyclo with different cutting pads and Hi-Temp Leveling polishes.

I do have some Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish (Step 2). I will try that first unless someone has a better alternative.

Well, without first hand knowledge and experience on the specific products that you have used thus far, and without having seen pics of the finish, I would almost be willing to bet if you were to throw one more step at it you would likely get much better results.

Have a hard look at #80 used with the PC and a Polishing pad. I have a feeling the fine cut cleaner left you in pretty good shape but I think the #80 will take it to the next level. After that then go with the DC #2. If you have #7 around I would use that instead but the difference between DC #2 and #7 are almost negligible unless use side by side.

Below I have listed a few products to look at. The #80 and #7 are here as well as #82 and #9. Without seeing anything I would at least go with #80. I think most folks go with that as a GoTo product.

I am adding an edit here. Please keep in mind I am not familiar with Hi-Temp Leveling polishes so you may not wish to act on what I am saying until some of the more experineced folks chime in. The polishes you have already used may have given you the same results as you can expect from #80. But at least we have thrown some ideas and links at you.

I would like to see some pictures too...

I buffed out a classic Aston Martin DB6 a number of years ago, I forget the exact year but I have some before, process and after pics somewhere.

Looked like this one only it was British Racing Green in color.

                          That's a beauty.
BTW: I'm off to the auto parts store tomorrow to pick up the items you recommended. Going over the car again with #80 is no big deal after the amount of work I've done. LOL

It should not take you more than 1-2 hours to run #80 over that. Be sure to run a few searches and get some fo the thoughts from other folks on using the #80 first. A few lessons learned from others will go a long way toward making your first attempt with it more enjoyable.
