  • can products 83 and 80 remove too much??

so how often can 80 and 83 be used before they go through your clearcoat with a PC?

  • #2
well that`s depended on how hard your clearcoat is on the paint...but the most modern clearcoats can have some passes before you go through with it.

Just to give you an idea, we can take our Finishing Papers, wool pad, and Diamond Cut 2.0 and remove less than .5 mil.

With that said, you can use DACP over and over and over with a PC with no problems of removing too much material and causing any type of paint failure.

I hope this clears things up

Nobody can really put that fine a point on this...there are just *so* many variables.

And it's not so much about going through the clear as it is taking off too much and compromising its integrity. You can't take off very much (opinions vary, I stick with one third of a mil) before you have to start worrying about UV exposure and other environmental issues. Clearcoats only do their jobs when they're nice and thick.

I know somebody who cut through the clear (as in, hit color coat, not just thinned it too much) on a 190 series Benz using a PC/#83/7006. This happened in St. Louis in '03 and IIRC Mike Phillips was there at the time. This car had never been polished before and such things aren't *supposed* to happen, but it did that time. I know the person and I know for a fact that this occurred. So you do have to be careful even with "mild approaches"; you just never know.

I've polished cars with b/c paint many, many times with products like these and the PC/Cyclo and I never had any problems. But every situation is different.

I will say that even with soft clear, if you're having to polish with #83 several times a year I'd rework the wash regimen or otherwise figure out how the paint is getting marred so much. That's *way* too often IMO so I'd try to stop inducing the marring in the first place.

that mercedes owner must have been pissed

its not so much that i get a lot of marring, i get a lot of stains on my black paint. and most of those stains are bee poop. it ***** too because im not able to QD my car everyday and i only get to wash it twice a month. plus it stays outside a lot.
so do you think 80 will get rid of those stains on a soft clear coat?

Yeah, she was pretty unhappy about it. Pretty surprised too, since she'd polished her other cars with similar products without any such unusual problems. No beginner either, she took national honors with a mid-'70s Jaguar on the club's concours circuit.

Given the nature of your problem, I'd try clay and/or some nonabrasive paint cleaner such as Deep Crystal Step #1. Then if that didn't do it, yeah, try the #80. I'd reserve stuff like #83 for swirls/scratches/stuff like that.

Maybe rethink your choice of LSP. I used to have an outside 24/7 car (with single stage paint no less) that was protected quite well with a few coats of the now-discontinued #16. I only washed it maybe twice a month yet it stayed *very* nice. Stuff just didn't seem to bond to the #16 and I could get by with just some very gentle claying when I washed. This helped preserve the thickness of the 20 year old original paint too

my LSP is currently nxt wax. you know, last week i waxed my car and 3 days later a bird took a dump (a big one at that). i thought for sure i would have an etching. after i wiped it off with some QD, there was a small stain. well a few days later that stain was gone i think nxt really repelled it from etching.

i think that one time when the bees decided to use my hood as their restroom, my layer of nxt was probably gone and so the stains etched in.
