  • M21 and Silicone or Silicone in general??

I met with a client yesterday and her all too "knowledgeable" hubby, was very concerned whether M21 contained silicones. Can anyone elaborate on why he was so concerned about this, and whether any Meguiar's product may contain this substance? I'd like to more intellgently answer such a question in the future!

    FWIW, he's a Mothers guy.

I dont know what he would be concerned about.

I believe you dont want silicones in a body shop/paint shop environment, as it can affect the bonding of paints. Is that right?

    And, FWIW,

On many of the occasions I heard these types of questions about silicone, I pursued the source of the worries. They stem from fact and fiction. As with any story which is repeated, the details can be lost from person to person. Normally, the original source meant well, but the knowledge was misinterpreted by having the story passed along.

Sometimes it was body shop staff telling their customers about fisheye problems due to silicone. As Murr eluded to, this most definitely is a legitimate problem. Ask anyone who knows painting and they'll verify it.

Sometimes it was detailing facilities telling their customers that competitors used "cheater" products loaded with silicones. (Same type of story as products loaded with "filler oils") The "cheater" products would rinse away after a strong rain or a car wash, leaving the customer with a swirly, unprotected finish.

Consequently, some people began to fear ANY and ALL silicones in automotive applications. These are the people who know just enough to worry about things, but not enough to know what is a legitimate concern and what is myth.

These are examples that lead people to think any silicone is bad and to worry that your wax or sealant is a silicone product that will, by its nature, ruin the paint or not be a true protectant.
See the big picture, enjoy the details

I've never heard of Mothers making any "no-silicones" claims. I'd be willing to bet there are silicones in their products.

(And no, I'm not suggesting that's a bad thing, only highlighting the potential irony.)

There are many kinds of silicone, and I would bet that there is some kind of silicone in every paint care product. The most commonly used product in polymer wax is Amino-Fuctional SILICONE.
