  • Which Product Should I Use To Restore This Dull Oxidized Paint? Pictures Included

HI, I have a 1974 chrysler imperial and I'd like to make it look as good as possible WITHOUT repainting it. The paint is thin on the car on the hood and trunk but seems ok on the sides of the car. I have a nice 10 speed buffer , about the size of a large grinder actually lol, that I use on my boat for waxing. I'm no pro but I know how to correctly use it. I have used some ultimate compound I had on the car it seemed to bring alot of life back to this old 1974 non clear coat paint that turned my foam hand buffing pad green LOL. Need some feedback from the pro's whether I should use ultimate compound, color x, heavy or fine cut compound. What pad should I use? Foam or wool and if wool what color? I see alot of choices in o'reilys and napa with many different color wool pads and many different compounds. Take a look at these pictures and see what you think..

Since you have single stage paint and you think your paint is thin, I would try to go with a DAT product that's not that aggressive. With that said, I would highly suggest using M80 - Speed Glaze. This will work great in removing the oxidation on your single stage paint while restoring gloss at the same time. You should be fine with using the yellow foam polishing pad.

#80 would be good... a strong buffer may not be...

You mentioned the paint was thin, so going aggressive in product and pad may not be a great idea. I suggest you read this article first:

I've done Mike's process on a few older single stage paint jobs and highly recommend it. As an example, here's a split shot of the roof of my El Camino after 4 aggressive rubs with M07 Show Car Glaze:

Love those '70 Chrysler land yachts - they take me back to my youth in Michigan when my dad worked for the pentastar and we always had one of these in the garage.

You mention the paint being thin and that you've got a rotary buffer at your disposal. That can be a very potent tool, especially when coupled with an aggressive pad, and wool certainly fits that bill. For those reasons we highly recommend you start easy here - skip the wool and stick with a foam polishing pad, and keep the buffer at a low-ish speed to start - under 1400 rpm and maybe closer to 1100~1200 at first. Single stage paint loves M80 Speed Glaze as it has a heavy dose of the same polishing oils found in M07 Show Car Glaze, but in M80 they're coupled with some light diminishing abrasives that do a great job of removing the heavy oxidation and other issues you've got here. You want to keep the pad nice and flat and keep the buffer moving; not quickly mind you, but don't let it sit in one place and don't use much more pressure than the weight of the tool (a bit more, but not much). Take it slow at first and get a feel for this paint, paying very close attention to sharp body lines, panel edges, etc. In fact, you may want to tape off much of that and then go back over them by hand later. Or, you could "edge" everything by hand first, giving you a nice, cleanly prepared border to machine buff up to. That process eliminates the need to buff close to an edge, which is the most dangerous part of that whole process, and it also prevents the possibility of any weird marks from buffing to a sharp tape line.

How many coats of M-80 speed glaze should I apply? Then can I follow it with carnuba wax?

If one coat of #80 removed the dirt/oxidation, then I would follow up with just a coat of a pure polish like #7, or DC Polish, etc.

If you needed another coat to remove the dirt/oxidation, then do a second coat.

Received my speed glaze 80 yesterday. What can I use to restore the leather seats in this car. They are perfect, but are gettting hard and dried out somewhat. What would restore the softness and make them pliable again?

Hard to say how much they can be softened, but something like the Gold Class Leather Cleaner/Conditioner would be a good start. I would want the cream, so I could apply a bit heaver coat. Then wait a bit, and remove excess.

Probably just as well not to have bought anything yet..

If you can get some pics in your new thread, that would be great to see where we are at first.
