  • Component Speakers... Alpine or Infinity?

Component Speakers... Alpine or Infinity? I have narrowed it to the two listed after listening to many speakers in my price range.

    What would you do?

    Infinity Kappa 5 - 1/4 components
    KAPPA50.5CS

    - or-

    Alpine Type R - 5 1/4 components
    SPR136A

Anyone recommend a good reputable web site to buy them from?

Isn't Infinity made by Alpine? My jeep had an infinity stereo in it that was actually made by Alpine.

Well I am not going to be compeating I just want something around $200 that is going to sound good, maybe not great but good. ANYTHING is better than a factory Ford (Ligthning) stereo! I want everything to look stock, other than the headunit, as not to draw any more attention to my truck for theaves.

For now I am going to be using my CDX750 Sony Mobil ES headunit to power them. I have a couple MTX amps I might hook up... well I know one of them is going to power my sub just a little 8" but now that I can get a larger sub in my truck I am going to pick something up after I get the speakers installed. My headunit too will be replaced within the year, need XM! Does that help?

I know this too well! I use to reach deep in my pockets for car audio, but now I just want something decent and easy on the ears. Something that sounds good for everyday driving but then you can turn it up from time to time to impress or just listen to some good music!

            Hi gb,

You've come to the right place...The link below will connect you to a great guy that sells near wholesale on a lot of Hi-Fi & car audio products. He saved me a lot of money when I went to a 5.1 home setup.

              ok

Well at least you have some sort of a back ground on systems out there.
Component Speakers are as you know multiple speakers NOT to be confused with coaxial or triaxial speakers that are mounted on a single surface like:

Component Speakers are a lot different and have a whole vast of possibility for sound set up's and tuning (these are what beercan prefers.) but its your money chose wisely.

              This is your KAPPA50.5CS

Rubber surround on the 50.5cs woofer is attached to the bottom of the Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm (C.M.M.D.) cone. The result is more cone area for incredible depth and fullness in the low frequency spectrum. The cone is lighter than previous models too, for greater midrange sensitivity.

Angle the highly-acclaimed C.M.M.D. tweeter in flush-mount mode for superb stereo imaging. The 3,500 Hz crossover network (18 dB/octave high-pass, 18 dB/octave low-pass) channels signals to the appropriate drivers for seamless output.

              Now these are the Alpine's

The SPR-136A 5-1/4" component system's 1" silk dome tweeters in either flush or surface mounts with the convenient quick-snap mounting ring. Then pivot them up to 20° to fine tune your stereo imaging. An aluminum-coated polypropylene cone pounds out tight bass, thanks to an extra-large magnet with a vented pole piece.

External crossovers (12 dB/octave high-pass, 6 dB/octave low-pass) with easy-to-use attenuation controls channel frequencies to the proper drivers for seamless and efficient sound reproduction. Tweeter protection diverts excessive power away from the tweeter.

This is the better speaker mostly because of the Tweeter protection and 1" silk dome tweeters in either flush or surface mounts with the convenient quick-snap mounting ring. Then pivot them up to 20° to fine tune your stereo imaging.

              But you already know this.

              good luck

I actually have them in several vehicles and like them in each. In the F-150 I have them mounted in the stock location (all 4 doors) and have them partnered to a small sub. It sounds pretty good for the small investment.

I've gone through www.onlinecarstereo.com for a number of decks, subs, and amps over the past couple of years and found their service to be great, as well as their prices. They have the infinity kappa50.5cs system for 169.00, and they have free shipping.

GearHead_1 did you make a plate to cover the factory opening in the door, then put the components in the plate?

You know what? I'm an idiot. I've been reading this post and for whatever reason missed the "component" part of it. I mean it's only in the title of this thread, what the heck. I thought people were helping you weigh the pro's and con's of components over traditional. My truck has the coaxial Kappa's with the external crossover (regular 5X7/6X8). My Town Car has true components with tweeters surface mounted flush in the door panels.

I've put several sets of Kappa's in using both component and traditional. The components do sound a little better but I wouldn't hesitate to install the coax set ups in my truck again. I wanted to keep the factory head unit in the truck and the only external amplifier in it is the one running the sub using a T harness set-up.

I really believe to get the most out of components you should be running multiple amps. I'm really not trying to talk you out of components, as I said I've got both and am happy with each set-up. Factoring in cost, ease of installation and overall performance I would probably do the same thing with my truck again. They sound pretty darn good along with a self powered sub. As I'm sure you already know the biggest benefit of component speakers is getting the tweeters closer to your ears, so find out where you can mount them. If you have to put them in the door panel (close to the main speaker location), I would think twice about components. I think the average blindfolded owner would be hard pressed to tell you which set-up is which unless your throwing more power at the components. By the way I had a set of component Alpine's in my truck, 2 trucks ago. They sounded very good also. Sorry for the confusion, I really can read.

                              Thanks for the help!

GearHead_1... I might just have to go check some good coaxials out I guess I never really checked any out. I listened to one pair of Boston Coaxial and that was it. Might just as well check some others out! I see your point about the tweeter closer to your ear I never gave it much thought. I don't want to cut any holes in my doors but if it would drastically improve my sound I just might do it. If I do that the Infinitys color matches my interior great. Hummm.... more food for thought!
