Worst day of my life I got a speeding ticket today. I usually drive the speed limit, but this time I drove a little faster, just for fun. I hardly speed anyways and the freeway I was on people usually speed. I think it *****, because of all the times I dont speed I dont see a cop, but when I do speed I get pulled over. Driving 85 mph at a 65 mph zone, good thing he didnt get me when I was hitting 95

Just imagine the gridlock we would have everyone obeyed speed limits to the letter of the law! Of course if everyone obeyed all speed limits it would show how ridiculous they are.
Speed limits are usually set for revenue generation not safety. Not that I condone doing 95 in a 65 though. Most speeding tickets are not written for 30 over. People in the town where I live have been ticketed for 5 over!

in the UK you can ask to see when the scamera was last calibrated( this is supposed to be done every day over here),
as someone was clocked over here doing about 95 on the
motor(free)way, but it was proved in court that his car could only just do 75( 70 is the limit over here).
i think the Germans have it right with the Autobahn, no speed limits when its quiet

You can challenge the calibration here in the US too. I think they are required to calibrate annually, but it varries.
I was on a jury once, and I must say it was an interesting experience. The argument was accuracy and calibration of a Brethalizer.
Apparently, someone got pulled over and scored a .21 BAC and their lawyer wanted to say the breathalizer was off. FYI, .08 is the legal limit.
Well, the breathalizer had records showing it worked before, and after it was tested and shown accurate too.
IMO, it is reasonable to assume if it was accurate before and after it tested the woman's alcohol level, it was probably accureate when it tested her BAC.
Besides, I could understand maybe .01 or .02, but for the breathalizer to say she was .13 over the limit is just nuts. I would be willing to give 10 to 20%, but over 200% accuracy problem... nope she was guilty.
Most of the jury consisted of a bunch of liberal just out of College Idiots! We had a hung Jury.
That would be like me being pulled over for doing 160 in a 70 MPH zone and then blaming the accuracy of the Radar Gun. Even if the gun was wrong and I was doing only 130 Mph, I would be still very guilty.

there was a national paper that bought a speed gun and did their own tests and some of it was very funny, someone jogging managed a result of 60 mph.
its been proven that any type of fence, shrub, posts can interfere with the laser and give inaccurate readings

Heh heh, every speeding ticket I've received, and that's a fewwas right on the money. Often they'll write it up as somethig lower if you come across right, or even let you go with a warning, but it depends on both you and the LEO.
I don't want to minimize LT22's distress, but if you drive fast long enough, well, by your umpteenth speeding ticket it just isn't that big a deal. Now that critical third one when you're a minor, the one that means you're gonna be walking for over a year, *that* ticket is something to stress over!Practical Perfectionist

A couple of months ago, I was traveling northbound on I 15, just entering Nevada. By accident, I had the volume on my Escort 8500 X50 turned down all the way instead of up all the way. It was 8:00 AM and that portion of I 15 runs east-west, so I couldn't see the radar detector display as I was heading into the rising sun.
My GPS showed 127 MPH as I caught a glimpse of a black Nevada State Trooper car in a cut-out in the middle of the high concrete wall bisecting the freeway.
I let off the gas and watched a scence unfold in my rear view mirror that looked like something from the "Dukes of Hazzard."
The State Trooper's car kicked up a ton of dirt and rocks as he spun his tires on the dirt in the center divider. He soon changed to laying down some serious rubber as he transitioned onto the concrete freeway. His lights came on, and for the first time in my life, I was being pulled over with lights and SIREN.
I immediately pulled over and wondered what constitutes reckless driving in Nevada? 100MPH? I watched the Trooper spend a good 30 seconds adjusting his campaign (Smokey Bear) hat before exiting his vehicle. In his best Marine Corps D. I. demeanor, he asked for my license and registration. I keptboth hands on the wheel and asked permission to reach for both documents.
He ran my information through the computer and as he wrote the ticket he asked, "Why did you do that?"
Mindful of my response, and keeping in mind that up to this point I was still in my car and wasn't wearing handcuffs, I replied, "Because I'm stupid."
The Trooper tried not to crack a smile and handed me a ticket for 107MPH in a 70. He told be to call the courthouse in a week to find out what the bail amount was. He said I should be able to go to traffic school. Traffic school for 107MPH? Yeah, right!
I called the courthouse immediately after getting on the highway. I was very nice to the lady on the phone, complementing her on answering the phone right away and fielding my questions before my ticket was even filed.
The lady told me that the bail (fine) was $500. I told her the Trooper said I should be able to go to traffic school.
"He did? What was his name? He shouldn't have told you that!"
"So, can I go to traffic school?" I said.
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely!"
My cell phone connection broke, so I called back and another woman answered at the courthouse.
I told her I was just on the phone and wanted to confirmthe $500 bail and traffic school.
She said, "That's correct. Your bail is $500 and you'll be able to go to traffic school to erase the points. That's the first time I've EVER heard Judge _____ offer anybody traffic school for 107MPH."
Turns ou the first lady I spoke with and complimented turned out to be THE JUDGE!
Traffic school took me 23 minutes on the internet.

No, it wasn't my first offense. Two days prior to getting that ticket, I beat a no u-turn ticket I received in California.
I found out that the city didn't post the signs according to the Manual on Uniforn Traffic Control Devices as adopted by the State of California on May 20, 2004.
The city engineer lied to me, so I filed a public information request and was able to prove that the city didn't use any guidelines when locating the sign in question. I also got the judge to review some 200 tickets the city issued other motorists for the same u-turn infraction.
Public Information Requests can be a beautiful thing!
I've gotten several tickets over the years, but have been pretty good at winning in court .
On-line traffic school is great. Here's a tip:
You have to read several chapters and take a quiz at the end of each. Each quiz can be repeated until a passing score is achieved. Print each quiz out as cheat sheet -the final is always comprised of questions from the quizes.Last edited by STG; Sep 12, 2005, 04:21 PM.
