  • Getting weird looks while detailing?

Anyone else get weird looks while detailing?

I live right outside of Memphis in North Mississippi on the corner on an intersection in my neighborhood. I notice people kind of look at me odd when they see me cleaning/detailing my car everyday—I even have teenagers yell gibberish at me (this is not related to detailing so much as their age/behavioral norms).

One theory is that since I live in Mississippi, that people are much more used to having a dirty car, even going into mid-town Memphis I notice a significantly higher level of car-detailing and nicer vehicles in general. Another theory is that detailing is almost antiquated in popular culture. From what I have researched, in the 50s, 60s, and 70s detailing was very common, and part of traditional Americana; I suppose now with so many automatic car washes and advancing of clear coat quality that maybe detailing as we know it is much more of a niche hobby?

The fireman and his sweety across the street don't really say much. I can tell they think her black Civic and his F150 are the business.
I'm sure they feel I take a lot of time for the same results they get from a brush/hose setup and a bath towel to mop up the water.

The local McGruff was walking her dog and asked if she could bring her car up after I was done. I threw her a curveball and said for a couple hundred I would make it nice and shiny.
      She thought I was joking.
Most people don't do what we do.

I too get weird looks from the neighbors and especially the g/f .They allways say the same thing, why are you wasting your time doing all that work when it's just going to get dirty again? Then they follow that up with will you do mine next! It is nice to get compliments though on how shiny and good my ride looks when im out!

Yep, same here. Well, until I started doing everything in the garage that is.

"Wanna do mine after you're finished?" Grrr that's a pet hate of mine!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Hah, guess I'm not alone. I thought it was really strange, actually, since everyone owns a car for the most part...you would think taking care of it would be pretty common place.

I guess different people have different views of what is involved in "taking care of it"

I get the looks now when I use the foam cannon or when I am out with a DA. And it is a pet peeve of mine too, "wanna do mine next" . I have said, sure, bring it over, but you probably aren't going to want to spend what I will charge you for it. I tell them, in the neighborhood of $150 plus and they keep walking.

I'm sure we have all been there :-). I always say, you cant afford me to detail your car. Explain the costs, then they run.

I can get it washed for $10 blah, blah.

You could add on to that " And I can show you how you how to keep it that way. " You may gain a client.

My neighbors have to all think I am completely nuts. Some of them walk by and crack snide remarks.

"You missed a spot" Yeah... And you missed your entire car
"You're going to rub the paint off of that washing it so much" Probably
"Mine is next" Sure, my services start at $50 an hour

There is a guy who walks the neighborhood a lot..he sees me washing my car and does the "You're going to wear the paint out" thing..so I sold the 9 year old car and replaced with something new..he saw me washing it and asked what happened to the old car..told him "I wore the paint out" We both got a laugh…Another guy saw the new car and said.."jeez do you buy a new car every year?" I said, 'No the old one was 9yrs old (and looked better than new)" He just looked confused and wandered off..

Nice area to live actually. I kinda miss it sometimes.

Re: Getting weird looks while detailing?

I get some looks from the neighbors. Even though I'm usually focused in on what I'm doing to let anyone bug me too much.. But what does bug me is when I get interrupted by a passer byer and have to remove my headphones as if they've got something important to tell me. Unfortunately 9 times out of 10 it's "hey can you do mine next" or something similar.. It's nice if someone says "looks good"
But getting interrupted to hear a meaningless comment kinda bugs me too. Lol.

You'd figure, if someone's wearing headphones this big and is focused in on what they're doing, they probably can't hear you! So if you're going to interrupt them, at least have something good to say.. Grrr. Lol.
It's usually the older folk early in the morning so I have to give them a pass.. But cmon already, how big do the headphones have to be to be left in peace?? Lol.

I get these jealous comments, too, but it's just that, jealousy. I think passersby are unable to see the difference in what we're doing, either because they are too far away or because they're just not tuned in to the whole deal. I also had someone say that washing too much would "rub the paint off", lol. You just have to laugh it off. However, I often now go to a covered public park pavilion for correction/polish/wax work so I don't have to be distracted by the "neighbor's windows" or gawking effect. When people walk by in the park, they usually drool and ask good questions, rather than say stupid stuff
