  • How long has Meguiars produced good smelling products?

Hey everyone, this question is for all you who are either older than me or have been into car care much longer than me.

I noticed last year when I bought some Meguiars fast finish liquid wax and did one of my dad's old cars that unlike today's awesome smelling Meguiars paste and liquid waxes the fast finish didn't have such a nice smell. It smelled ok, but nothing sweet and pleasant. Even when it was as old as it was it still performed wonderfully but it had the smell of a traditional wax.

But anyway it got me to thinking, was there a time when all Meguiars waxes, polishes and washes had a typical chemical smell to them and if so when did they start "putting in the smell goods"?

I was also wondering are there any discontinued Meguiars products that smelled really good? And if so what were they and what did they smell like? Anyway, just some cool questions to ponder.

Take a whiff at some the 'Mirror Glaze' line (M-7 for example), they all seem to have that 'industrial smell'. Personally I really like it, kinda reminds me of when I started playing with cars.

I really can't answer when they began to smell 'pretty'. Just seems all of sudden it was, "Hmmm, that smells neat."

For me, the first (I think) product that had a pleasant smell was a free sample of Mothers Cleaner/Wax. That would have been 10-15 years ago.

Now, I want to go start sniffing all of whatever I have to see what smells nice and what doesn't..LOL.

M07 smells, while not terrible, smells not as nice as some meguiars products. It has an honest smell to it, it delivers in shine and depth but sort of like if you don't like the way i smell then don't use me type of smell. however, I am a bit mindful or cautious when smelling the compounds (ultimate and swirlX), especially the residues that can usually be unavoidable, I am paranoid about the carcinogenic properties. Maybe I'm wrong, but i err on the side of caution. Ultimate compound and swirlX also have a "nicer" smell to it.

Wait. What? You bought some Fast Finish just last year??? That product is easily 15 years old, if not closer to 20! Where the heck did you find it, and how much did you pay for it?

As for the aroma of our products, a lot of that started to change when our current VP of R&D joined the company almost 20 years ago. Interestingly, he came from the cosmetics industry and was initially surprised at how many ingredients used in automotive finish care are shared with cosmetics formulations (crazy, huh?) - but coming from that industry he is also acutely aware of how important smells can be to the end user, and so he started adding this into the mix.

I got some believe it or not from someone here on the forums. He had some old full bottles of the liquid wax that he wanted to sell and I think I got like five or six bottles from him for like only $30.00 or so. It was a heck of a deal.

Once I got them I tried some on one of my dad's old cars. It was a 1984 red Pontiac Fiero. The paint was somewhat oxidized on the hood and trunk lid. But once I applied some of the Fast Finish to the car, I remembered it applied very easy and came off super super easy. And it left a very nice deep shine.

If you want to, I"ll post some photos that I took of that car after I waxed it.

I'm glad that they started making good smelling products...it adds to our therapy experience. My favorite is Ultimate Liquid wax at the moment...although, I wish the smell was a bit stronger. Ultimate Quick Wax, Ultimate Wash and Wax, NXT 2.0 Liquid wax and NXT wash are others that I love.

Just curious, what does the Ultimate Quick Wax smell like? I haven't tried it just yet. I've tried all the others so far, but not the UQW.

That is REALLY intereseting about tie in with the cosmetic industry. Sure leaves me wanting to make a bunch of smart a**ed remarks...LOL. Well, just one, How about using UQD or just QD for 5 O'clock shadow?

About the odor of UQWax...I can't place the smell, but pleasent is the understatement.

The best way I could describe it is some type of sweet drink like kool-aid. It's good.

By the way...while on the subject of "best smelling"...but not Meguiars...check out Zymols new consumer line of wash, detailer spray and spray glaze. MY GOSH...they smell so freakin' good...like some sort of tropical coconut paradise! And they all are fine products! I have been using the car wash quite often...great suds and long lasting and it feels really rich when applying to the car. It's probably my favorite wash at the moment.

I love the scent of UQW, Mother's has their version of UQW, think it's FX spray wax...and that smells pretty good too....
I think it's pretty much a standard as many of us want detailers & spray waxes etc etc to be pleasing while we work on our vehicles.....pretty sure many companies have it as part of their R&D

I love the smell of Wash and Wax Anywhere. It makes my garage smell good once the cars are parked in it.

Yeah, I've used Zymol's liquid cleaner wax, it has that same coconut smell you are referring to. I've had what little of it is left in my garage for a couple of years now. And the smell has worn off quite a lot though. I do want to try their new spray detailer that came out earlier this year. LOL I kinda find it strange talking good about a Meguiar's competitor here on the Meguiar's forum though. I feels kinda like it's blasphemey or something. But either way after you described the smell, I really do want to try UQW too sometime soon.

M06 cleaner wax smells exactly like this banana ester I synthesized in one of my organic chem labs a few years back. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was the scent agent in it:
