  • Experiences with Plasti Dip?

I am kind of curious about the spray-on rubbery paint product. I see a lot of people are using this stuff on interiors, exteriors, wheels and even
entire cars.. -I am thinking about trying this on my chromed Ruff Racing rims, since I do not really like the cromed look for my Audi Allroad.

    Any tips?
Here is a link to a Youtube channel, for a guy who sells this stuff.

I am thinking, if it lasts more than 3-4 months I am willing to give it a go for my wheels,
and seems like it is pretty durable, as long as the film does not get punctured.

Indeed it is durable, held up fine against a power washer (did a grille temporarily with plasti dip). Removed it a week later though...

My main negatives about the product is the finish (matte) and the texture (kinda of rubbery, orange peel). Additionally when wiping down the car with microfiber cloths, be sure to avoid the plastidip as it catches the cottons on the cloth and is very hard to remove.

Concerning the matte finish... they make a glossifier that gives it a shine versus the flat finish. Have not personally tried it though.

Give it a shot on one wheel and see if you like it. The process is easily reversible as long as you lay down a few thick goals. A couple light coats are much harder to remove.

Best of luck and hope this helps

      Thanks, pmanliu, for your input.

I imagine drying/wiping down is hard. How did you wash it? I imagine APC is good for this. Drying I imagine can be done carefully
with pressured air from a good distance. I guess wet rims is something i have to get used to.

Trying this product in a few days, doing a Passat chrome front grille.
This is a pic of my car, do you think a matte black will look allright on these rims? In my country, matte black, white, red and blue are the only colors available.
Not that big a fan of black wheels, but i am SO fed up of these chromed ones. Fender covers are matte black, thinking this would help for the look
This is the finish i have available:

The car has air suspension, and can be lowered, so it is often lower than this pic. what do you think?

I think the matte black may work well in your scenario. Doesn't hurt to pick up a can of the glossifier afterwards though if you want a semi-shiny to super glossy finish.

As for wash, nothing special - the same wash technique with wash mitt and car soap on the rest of the ride. I let the water airdry on the plastidip parts but using compress air should do the trick.

Best of luck, and post some after pics :-)

I see plasti dip has both glossifier and metalizer that can be added, but this is not available in my country..

Still need winter tires for another 3 weeks or so, will post pics when the dipping is done!
Got some serious buffing to do, as well..

              Re: Experiences with Plasti Dip?

I did my winter wheels with Plastidip last summer/fall.

They held up OK through a very mild IL winter.

              Here's how they looked originally

I washed the car 5-10 times this winter using ONR, and within 2 washes, the places where the Plastidip was applied thinner (crevices, corners) it started to peel off. They will need to be redone this summer.

I plan on painting the fresh Plastidip, then I'll paint then rattle can paint and then clear coating them. This should make them last longer.

Ironically enough, my badges have been plastidip'd for 2 winters now and those are holding up perfectly. Same process for both, not sure why 1 worked perfect and the other not so much.

Isn't heat an issue with using Plastidip on wheels? Depending on how "spiritedly" you drive and how hot the brakes/wheels get, I'd imagine that would be hard on the Plastidip.

This was of my biggest doubts about this product. Think about the burnt brake particles and everything.
However, Plasti Dip is very heat tolerable, since it is practically rubber. It is also very elastic.

                      Re: Experiences with Plasti Dip?

                      Okay, an update!

I got hold of six spray canisters of Plasti Dip. This is how it went!

First I washed all wheels extra thoroughly, did some iron cut w/ IronX

Left to dry, clayed a bit but could not find much to take out.

Wiped down first with Quik Wheel detailer
                      Then with 3M GPAC

Started spraying.. -I went for 5 thin layers with 30 minutes between application.
                      Some pics:

I have not had all that much time to decide if I like it. Made the car look a lot more "Batman" -and that was also a little bit what I was afraid was going to happen.

I can see some chrome showing through in some areas. -Might do a little touch up when the car gets detailed the next time.
                      Might try using a brush.
I also would like to try some metalizers/glossifiers from PD, but they are not sold here as of now.

So, just wanted to show what I ended up with. Photos are terrible, but you get the idea!
                      Thanks for all imput.

                        Re: Experiences with Plasti Dip?

I'm actually considering doing this on my Vue. The wheels are just awful with corrosion from the previous owner's neglect and I'd rather not pay to have them refinished right now. It'll be interesting to see how long it lasts with me driving 500 miles or so a week.

I think the wheels looked better chrome. Sweet ride for sure, but needs some tint!
