  • Transmission noise in new car, normal or not?

Tried posting this in an Impreza forum but got no response. I've had such great experience here, I'd thought I'd ask you guys what you thought.

Ever since I bought my 2011 Impreza with automatic transmission its made a "clank" sound when shifting from Park to Reverse. I always engage the parking brake. The noise happens after the car has been sitting (as little as 30 minutes sometimes) and once I shift from Park to Reverse, it won't happen again until after the car has been parked again. The noise happens if the car is parked on a flat surface or incline. Had the dealership look at the transmission and they said everything looked fine. Any input would be great!

(Noise is at 3 seconds, when shifting from P to R after a night in the garage.)

I have 3950 KMs on my 2011 Subie, I never recall hearing a "clank" or "click" .
But having owned a 1999 Prelude with the sport shift AT .....it was always a little rough til it warmed up......I suspect since you only experience this clank when the tranny is cold...it could be normal? I'll listen for this in the morning when I jump into my Subie

Thanks! It is easily missed with the air or radio on if you are sitting in the car.

I've had the same sound on 'her' 2000 Sub since day one. I pretty sure it is the linkage 'clinking'.

Maybe see if the dealer will let you try it on a comparable car on the lot? Hard to say because I could see that being normal on one make/model, but not another.

Have you checked the tranny fluid to make sure it is at the proper level? Engine or tranny mount loose or need lube? Linkage?

Try to get the car on a lift and let it sit for 30 mins and then have someone under the car when the noise happen to isolate.
            Good luck!

Sounds like the same noise my 2002 Chevy avalanche makes when shifting to reverse from any gear. It's not a big deal at all. That's what multiple dealers and local shops said. Its possibly the U joints, or just linkage in general. Your fine.
