  • A deer test

While we're having some breaks in the SEMA action and updates, I thought it would be a good time to conduct some endurance or short term abrasive testing of Meguiar's products.

This 2010 Nissan Maxima was thoroughly cleaned with a variety of three different Meguiar's soaps. The washing was followed with a full clay job and then the car was polished twice. The first session of polish was M205 on a Meg yellow pad at speed 4.5 and then the second session was M205 on Meg black pad at speed 1. The end result was perhaps minimal correction, but the most awesome shine and reflections on this car. Which my wife, who the car belongs to, was greatly impressed.

In preparation for winter, the car was waxed three times. First, with M21 by machine using a black Meg pad and hand, 14 hours later waxed with M21 again by machine using a black Meg pad and hand. The final waxing 6 hours after the second was with Gold Class + using a LC red pad and again some areas by hand.

    Great looking car when done.

The next evening was the testing was to begin. The majority of the test was conducted with the assistance of a deer running into the side of the car.

It is obvious Meguiar's does not impart any structural stability to the car parts most affected by the impact, the bumper, quarter panel, hood, headlight and driver's door.

The shine and reflection for the most part remained, except in those areas missing paint.

Some scratches were not prevented in the areas of denting or stress cracks in the paint flexure areas.

Overall the Meguiar's performed exceptionally well under normal abrasive test areas. While the Meguiar's was unable to prevent deformation under abnormal impact loading.

Hope you found this mildly humorous. As I can assure you my wife cannot, since I was driving her car when the deer ran into the side of the car.

I think you can buff that out................Nick Chapman did say M105 could fix anything.

      That stinks though, sorry.

I picked up a bottle of 105 once. The store manager told me to put it back because I hadn't completed my apprenticeship yet and 105 is for real detailers.

Perhaps if they give me the removed parts from the Maxima, I can practice on them!

I heard the new Ultimate Wax is supposed to be able to withstand deer impacts.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

            I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
            Remove swirls my friends.

While this very well may be true, I would suggest any intensive testing be conducted by us experts as it is so difficult to maintain a controlled environment to obtain meaningful results.

We should also avoid any discussions of "layering" for structural integrity until adequate testing of the new product has been completed by the MOL community to establish personal preferences in the "appearance" category. Which, as you know, may take a year or two or three or more to complete.

I know our insurance company would prefer future testing be delayed and my wife wishes testing be curtailed indefinitely.

The only problem that I can see is that after washing the car , you forgot to iron it. Sorry i couldn't resist it. LOL

Nice to see you keeping your spirits up following the Bambi incident, David. Hopefully your wife will come around and see the humor too.

Of course, now you'll have some body panels to take home from the body shop, so you can buy a rotary and start learning how to use that tool!

Oh my, I was thinking on the wrong level. I was thinking DA practice to complete my apprenticeship, but rotary...yet another reason to get more training in California! Plus the holiday season is right around the corner, what a great gift a rotary would make!
