  • Customer Misconception

The Setup: I was in Wally World yesterday in the Auto Care section and I noticed a customer looking for something. As the customer explained what he was looking for, I realized that he probably needed Meguiar's Ultimate Compound as well as a nice wax (I suggested Gold Glass).

The Misconception: Turtle Wax products have "wax" directly in the product name, so this individual was SET on getting a Turtle Wax product. Upon realizing that his product wasn't sold in Wally World, he left abruptly and empty-handed.

My Question: Do new individuals to the detailing world go for TW products because "wax" is in the name?

I do not think so. I think for the new people, it is more of "this is what my dad used" type of thing. Being new, they most often do not understand the whole preparation process. So it boils down to, this was good enough for my dad, it is good enough for me.

This is were we come in. Help educate these individuals.

I had a friend of mine reach for the Turtle Wax Old School Rocks-in-a-can Rubbing and Polishing Compound with my bottle of Ultimate Compound in my hand. He said, "This stuff's better."

Even though I showed him through direct comparsion, his father used the Turtle Wax his entire life. (The cans sure looked like it too!)

It couldn't be that good if the cans are still sticking around. If a product is good I use it (even though wax goes a long way).

Even though you are just trying to help someone in the Auto section. I think you may be better off letting them do their own thing. I just sort of listen and shake my head. Of course I'd be helpful if it looked like the person really wanted help, but I wouldn't go out of my way.

I am not the very talkative type, when I see people checking out the car section, whatever wax they choose to use is at least better than not caring at all for their car.

I have to _really_ resist the urge to say something in the Walmart auto section.... and there is an opportunity almost every time. Walmart has a nice selection of Megs products but still, I find the majority of people buying car products at Walmart are not going to be as "educated" (read) as most of the people here.

It's great that we all share this common interest and can relate with one another. We don't do this just because it makes sense, there is a lot of emotion in behind our passion.

People buy Turtle Wax because it leaves a nice "hard layer" of wax on the finish. Thats why there is a picture of a turtle shell on the bottle. We all know that a turtle shell is hard

im not gonna lie when i first started cleaning my first car i used TWax soap in the gallon or whatever... the formula 2000 tire shine... and thats it on everything evben interiors!.. i use it cause it was cheaper! used it for a long time! now i walk straight to the meguiars sections and the rest is history!

i do try to assist people who look like they have no clue on what to choose. and i always turn em to meguiars!
