Is nitrogen better in tires then air?

they say its a bigger molecule so it stays in the tire longer, it doesnt heat up and expand like air does, and its lighter so it performs better. is this just a way for them to take more of your money or is it actually better then air?

from what i was told...normal air is like 80% nitrogen so its not a huge diff....im thinking about getting it done as well...

I had nitrogen in my last set of tires. The air pressure never varied by more than a pound in the 3 years I had those tires, so there is something to those claims.

Our Nissan's are the first tires we had with nitrogen. Even in various temps settings they never vary. I think it would be a good choice. We are very happy.

Another claim is "dry" nitrogen gas does not degrade the tire rubber (compared to air). Supposedly, the oxygen in air oxidizes rubber.

If the air pressure doesn't very, that means you will get better gas mileage. That's about it performance wise man.

Yep, that would be it. Most people don't check their air pressure as often as they should. Running on under inflated tires reduces handling, increases tire wear, and reduces fuel economy. Running nitrogen reduces the possibility of losing air pressure over time.

what they need to do is start putting nitrogen pumps in gas stations so i dont always have to go to dealerships or tire shops to get the nitrogen

How else would they make money on this product.

In that air should not be mixed with nitro filled tires, you _are_ going to need to take it back to the place you filled up at.

If you check the tire pressure when you should then nitro is just over priced air. If you don't check your pressure when you should then nitro might help to a _very_ limited extent.

Since all new vehicles have TPMS, using nitro is really not going to do much.

Air pressure can vary dramatically in a 24 hour period. Air pressure can change as much as 1-3 psi from just sitting on a cold morning, to sitting in the hot afternoon. Nitrogen alleviates this fluctuation, which maximizes the overall performance of a tire.

True. Next time I'm running my car in NASCAR I'll fill up the tires with nitro. A Google search on the subject will reveal a lot of (mis)information on the subject.

"The test started on September 20, 2006 and the final measurements were taken on September 20, 2007. The results show nitrogen does reduce pressure loss over time, but the reduction is only a 1.3 psi difference from air-filled tires. The average loss of air-filled tires was just 3.5 psi from the initial 30 pressure setting. Nitrogen-filled tires lost an average of 2.2 psi from the initial 30 psi setting. More important, all tires lost air pressure regardless of the inflation medium, so consumers should check their tires' air pressure routinely. No evaluation was done to assess the aging claim."

"Bottom line: Overall, consumers can use nitrogen and might enjoy the slight improvement in air retention provided, but it's not a substitute for regular inflation"

So nitro _also_ looses pressure. If you check your tires once or twice a month, as you should do in both cases, then it's not going to make a difference. In the case of nitro you might be running longer with lower pressure as you'd only be able to fill them up for free at the same place that originally filled them up.

It certainly won't hurt your vehicle to use nitro... it will only hurt your wallet.

My stealership, like most others offers free top offs. The tires came that way at delivery. So, my cost so far has been zilch.

Yup... they do this so you have to take the vehicle back to them whenever you need to inflate the tires. That way they can offer to change the oil or any other work that might make them a buck. Of course this also means you need to drive to them (burn expensive gas) just to inflate your tires.
