It was a pinkish colored Rambler Classic. Had to put in a rebuilt transmission, an auto, push button. I screwed up the linkage. When I got done, you couldn't just push "D", ya had to push a special sequence of buttons. Next I had to replace a head gasket. By the time I was done the head was cracked and it was burning anti-freeze. I switched to motorcycles.

Hi, mine was a 1974 Austin Mini 850cc in Blaze orange with wide chrome slot mags. I was the 3rd owner when I bought it in 1993 for £400. It was well looked after and had only done c50,000 miles.

In good original condition they fetch a mint now as they were neglected cos everyone wanted a Mini with a 1275 engine!

I wish i still had it now

My first car was a 1954 Buick Riviera Roadmaster coupe. This was WAY back in 1959. First brand spanking new car was a 1964 Chevy Chevelle SS, 283, 4-spd in "Arrest-Me" red.

Here is my 1961 Renault Dauphine. 32 horsepower with a 3 speed floor shift with non synchro first gear. That was a real runner. I suspect the top speed was somewhere around 70 mph.

Mine was a 1964 Volvo 122S, looked like an egg, pretty rusted around the lower fenders. Refurbed it back to mint condition. Gotta find a pic...

Not only do I remember it, I still own it

'95 Pontiac TransAm. Mainly a garage queen, but I am driving it while my Volvo S70 is in the shop. Just had it resprayed last year, hope to keep it in great shape for years to come.

Re: Do You Remember Your First Car?

My first vehicle was a dark grey 1988 1/2 Ford Escort (2 door). My father talked me out of buying a same year VW Golf, because he knew the dealer. I had just graduated high school at the time and put $3000 down on it (I think the MSRP was $8000). I absolutely hated the car, gutless, unreliable, various electric gremblins (including engine shutting off for no reason at highway speeds, finally corrected with a zip tie on the ECM), transmission problems(luckily fixed under warranty), rattles, drained batteries. As you can see,it was a miserable experience for me. To think, I could have had a better car (VW GOLF) for not much more. I did put over 100K unhappy miles on it and paid it off in 2 years.

This did teach me two important lessons:1) research your vehicle choices prior (easier now with quick internet searches) and 2) do a proper test drive to include various driving situations. I have since then had over 10 cars (Japanese, Swedish, American) and have had very good luck with all of them.

1949 Ford. I could see right through the floor boards to the road.
Bought it for 50 bucks ( previously loved of course) if memory serves me right. It did not last long.
Darn near got asphyxiated from the thing!
Bought it from the most honest dealer in town!

A blue 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle station wagon. I traded my best friend a Harmon Kardon cassette deck for it. The person that owned it before him had died in it (suicide). When I got it I filled a paper grocery bag with beer bottle caps and pull tabs from the very back end. It was our party wagon. I loved that old hunk o' sh!&. It had a 350 w/a 4 barrel, a shift kit and glass packs. Drove it from spring '84 to spring '85. I remember my father taking it one winter morning, I listened as he drove out of the neighborhood like the old man he was; but as soon as he got to the main drag: ROAR!!!!

I miss the old man too.

Re: Do You Remember Your First Car?

Mine was a 1977 Camaro. I bought it on or close to my 17th birthday in August of 1986. I paid $800 cash. It only had 58,000 miles on it when I got it, but it had quite a bit of rust considering the mileage and the fact that it was only 9 years old. It really is a testament to how many light years ahead the auto manufacturers are as far as rust prevention in this day and age. If you see a 9 year old car now with similar mileage, it probably still looks pretty nice.

This picture was taken at my graduation party in June of 1987. I had just gotten it out of the body shop a few days before. I had new rear quarters put on, the front fenders patched, and the front end fixed from the fender bender I had 2 days before Christmas of 1986.

My first car. how to describe it lol. it was a 89 Dodge Dynasty, my grandma's car, got it for free because she can't drive anymore only had 30k miles on it lol. it had more issuse than my T-Bird thats twice its age. On my drivers test, my power steering pump blew a seal out the main box and leaked all the power steering fluid during the test and so it was moaning and grinding the entire test but i still passed with flying colors. after that one month later we had a freeze at my house and it sat outside so the car was covered in ice so i go out to warm it up and when i shut the door the driver window fell down lol not fun when the heater does not work driving to school when its 29 degrees. And it loved to just out of the blue the alarm went off lol. during school i would go out to get my lunch or get a book. i put the key in the lock and the alarm goes off so i tried for 7 min one time to get the alarm to turn off so i left it with it going off and come back to a dead battery lol. fun times. i only had it for two months until i found my 97GT my second car.
