I was involved in a collision that prematurely ended my career. I could not agree more with Underdawg.

Why stop reading when I say kid, he was 18, to me that's a kid...I know I was at that age....and how i wish to be there again!

If your point is age, speed knows no age. I've been overtaken by grandma and grandpa on the highway once or twice, one blew by me doing at least 90 in a 65.
Speed is an illness just like detailing, only the consequences are a bit more severe!
I just offered the original poster my recommendation on a radar detector, your brain. Like booze and cell phones along with other things, nothing good comes out when behind the wheel.

    But it's all good!

I almost stopped reading there. Are you _trying_ to prove my point for me?

That being said, I have the Escort 9500ix, it's a great system. It will go off almost a mile before you can even see the cop. It also blocks out false alarms, and stores the location of speed cameras, which is good in Arizona.

I've haven't gotten a ticket in over 3 years. And if I did get a ticket I'm fully aware that it is my fault and accept the consequences of my actions.

With that aside, I enjoy driving. I don't drive to get from point A to point B. I have fun while I drive, and most of my friends consider me a safe driver as well. You need to understand your limits, your car's limits, and be aware of your surroundings, and the law.

I can't agree any more with Nappers, and J.A.. The best radar detector out there is your eyes and foot....along with your brain. If your going so fast you need a radar detector then you need to take it to a track, no need to put my family and families of others at risk for those with a "need for speed".

I won't lie, I do speed but when only a) when there's no traffic around and I'm on the highway and b) when I'm responding to a call where there may be a life threatening situation or when I'm taking that person to the hospital.

I drove like a nut when I got my first car, then I ran my first bad accident call where a kid around my age wrapped his Mustang around a tree after hitting another car on a tight curve....that's pretty much all I'm gonna say about that.
Since then I've ran countless call that involve speed, and the song remains the same.

Sorry for my rant, just been at the business end of a stupid mistake way to often..... ok I'm off the soap box now!

J.A. You are right..5 minutes arent worth it...i remember doing the math one day in a physics lecture..my scenario was someone was late to work and their job was a 13 mile trip..what would be the difference if he had gone 60mph the whole way and 95mph the whole way and the difference of arrival time was 5 minutes (roughly)...5 minutes to risk losing your life and destroying the lives of the ones who love you ? is it worth it ? absolutely not..when i was young, yeah i will admit i drove a little fast..but i learned my lesson, being older now, it makes me laugh so much at how i could have done those dumb things when i was younger..if i would of had the knowledge i do now when i was younger, i am sure i would of made better choices.

i have to totally agree with you guys...i've been in a bad situation before, and i can honestly say, speeding is just so stupid..i am an engineer and i have a lot of background in physics...and on average, the difference between going 60mph and 95mph is only a 5 minute difference, its not worth it...some people will learn the hard way though..its just horrible to hear when people get hurt. i drive my valentine one only because i've had it for so many years now and i cant drive without it...it does help me, when everyone else is doing 65-70 mph i like to be the one who slows down to 55 hehe. i just like being aware of my surroundings...im never worried about police seeing my detector, its hardwired so seriously sometimes i dont even know its there, ive actually asked a cop before he let me be on my way "hey did u see my detector" and he was like huh ? i didnt see that"..it was rather quite funny but i knew the officer so it was more a joke than anything and we both laughed because he never thought it could be tucked and hidden so well...anybody here a police officer ?

I agree, I think the worst call we got was a hispanic fellow was cut in half while attending to his truck at the rear. Someone ran in the back of him at a higher speed rate and killed the guy, my partner on shift is bi-lingual and had to assist with translating to his family the outcome....had the person been driving slower, the reaction times would have been better and averted crashing into the poor guy and his family and maybe he would have lived.

I'm sure the 5% pay increase for bi-lingual paid for itself that night telling a tearful spouse and kids that their dad died......not good.

I have heard the Passport brands are not too bad now that someone mentioned it.

Oh yeah, the planes in the sky don't use radar, they use timers and have several cops ready to pounce when a speeder is spotted, most cops are certified in speed recognition as well as certification in radar use, oh and to add when a cop sees a radar detector mounted the chances of a ticket goes up, also slamming on the brakes when going by a cop most likely will get his or her attention. AND! when someone goes by and gets honks as they are being tended by your area's finest, the chances of a ticket goes up as the person honking has almost been ran over by said speeder.

"I was going to give a warning....." HONK HONK "but you were driving pretty fast so sign here, press hard 4 copies."

Oh yeah, stay off of that phone too, people with cell phones are likely more to crash or equal to those under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Homicide charges are placed on those individuals if the accident results in death in those cases.....

Drive careful folks! Have a designated driver and if you speed, be careful.

We have cows in our area with open range, wacking a cow at a high rate of speed is bad!

I've had an escort passport 8500 for about 3 years now and I love it. I'm going to be selling it soon and upgrading to a passport 9500ix.

Keep your speed at the posted speed limit or under and you'll never have to worry about getting stopped for speed. Its easy AND free. Can't beat that!

Here's a free tip for those that do use RADAR detectors. If you get stopped for anything and have a detector in your vehicle that is visible to the law enforcement officer that has stopped you, your chances of getting a ticket instead of a warning went up ten fold.

My thoughts exactly....Plus if you've seen what happens to your body in a high speed crash like those we watched in high school and didn't care about, it changes your mind when you see them when your older with your kids and wife/girlfriend etc in the car with you.....

My sister has a brand X "detector" and it hasn't helped her with speeding tickets....she calls me and asked if I can help her with her ticket, I said, yeah, go to court and hope the cop doesn't show up and don't agree to waive time and it gets dismissed.....I tell her to SLOW DOWN! I gave her one of my cards and maybe that will help....doubt it though.

Lift right foot slightly works for me and I get better mileage out of my cars too. Too many cameras in the bigger cities to nail you too! My sister got one and it was a perfect shot of her with her dog....I laughed. She also fried a transmission in her Acura from hot rodding too! Ahhhh, the young.....

To add, I'm not slamming you for wanting a radar detector, as I also like to "knock the carbon off of the valves" but I don't generally speed, worse case for me is 5 over the limit and never had a cop look at me, especially on my own turf, but other juridictions, I never get bothered.

As for the brand, I couldn't tell you, the best one my dad had when I was a kid was a "Fuzz Buster" and it worked great, unfortunately the Chevy station wagon with SBC 400 was wound up too much for him to stop that behemoth by the time the alarm sounded and almost put us through the windshield slamming on the brakes....LOL, no seatbelts in those days!
