I recently got some used parts for my '64 Bel Air. They are not the color that I need them to be. The parts are plastic and I am going to put a primer and then a coat of the color that I need. What kind of sandpaper, for a car, would work?

Re: what kind of sandpaper
A # 1500 to #2000 grit wet-dry paper or a Scotch-Brite green pad is what I use on smaller parts before primeing and painting. As Murr1525 asked , are you re-painting or changing color ? Also it's important to know what parts are being painted. If these parts are flexable then a different additive needs to be added to the paint.

Re: what kind of sandpaper
I am going to use them on plastic kick panels. I'm going to have to change the color on two of the three kick panels. So yes, I'm going to rough up the surface so I can use primer. Or do I have to rough the surface being they will probabley be porus anyway?Sleepy

Re: what kind of sandpaper
On GM kick panels I would clean or de-grease them with APC or some type of strong cleaner then scuff them up with 3m green pads or Scotch-Brite to give the paint something to adhere to. There are also plenty of paints made especially for these interior applications.

I would go to Year One. They deal with restores daily compared to the computer clerk at Carquest.

Re: what kind of sandpaper
I would look into the SEM product line before starting to sand your kick panels. I am pretty sure they use an extremely strong cleaner/degreaser with no need to sand before paint. If its fast, loud, and runs on a flammable liquid...count me in.

Re: what kind of sandpaper
I have a paint cleaner that I used on my dash when I was given some bad advice about how to clean and protect the paint on the dash. Would this be enough? or should I look at 1500 sandpaper?Sleepy

Re: what kind of sandpaper
Careful with paint cleaner on plastic. I would apply a little maybe to the backside of panel where it wouldn't show as maybe a test spot before messing up the side that shows. Try a green scotch-brite pad on the back side as a test and see how it looks works.Live like you're not afraid to die.Don't be scared, just enjoy your ride. Chris Ledoux RIP
