  • Self help, being a better business man type books...

Looking for some self help style books to be a better business man, so I figured I'd ask the smart ones(thats you guys)

Went to Barnes and Noble the other day, and browsed through some books. Obviously none of them are dedicated for detailing. So I'm really not sure which books would be right for a detailing business. Obviously being a better salesman is a start, but I'm also wanting to better myself at business practices, doing the books, keeping things in line, running a smarter opperation, things like that. Would prefer 1 book to cover all aspects of my needs, but open to a couple of them, if they'll do me better.

    Any suggestions?

I've always been into self help type books. They just make me a little smarter, and feeling better about myself

There's the old classic "Think and Grow Rich".

Doubt if you have the time for it, but many community colleges offer small business classes at night that meet once, maybe twice a week.

As for a small business book specifically focusing on automotive detailing, we're still waiting for you to write it!

So you are wanting to find a book that will help you run the business better and smarter? Well honestly I think that you are already such a nice personable guy you dont need to worry much on salesmanship on the other things you mentioned (dont take my word as I havent started my business classes yet) I feel that sometimes people make it seem harder than it is. You will need a book to keep track of payments and such, but I think really it all comes down to being extremly anal and very well organized. When you have everything organized everything seems to flow better imho

Here are couple that I have been reading recently, most of them are required MBA readings (except Dave Ramsey):

Good To Great - Jim Collins
Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity - David Allen
This I Believe - Allison, et. al.
The 4-Hour Workweek - Timothy Ferris
The Entrepreneurial Venture - Sahlman, Stevenson, et. al.
Outliers - Malcolm Gladwell (also check out "Blink" & "The Tipping Point" by Gladwell)
The Three Laws of Performance - Zaffron & Logan
Call Me Ted - Ted Turner
Total Money Makeover - Dave Ramsey (little extreme, good principles on personal money management)
NOTE: Post count does not reflect actual detailing knowledge.
