    God is punishing me for my sins ...

    I began on Wednesday morning at 9:30--the long awaited spring detail. It is now Thursday evening, and I haven't finished polishing yet. I ran into problems with the soft Honda paint. I discovered that it does not like my new Flex D/A. It doesn't matter which polish I used--UC, SwirlX, M205 nor does it matter whether I use a polishing pad or a finishing pad nor does it matter what speed I use (though I did not try it at speed 3). Here is what my door looked like after M205:





    Fortunately, through the sound advice of a couple of our MOL members, I appear to have found a solution--not a perfect solution, mind you--I do not presently have the detailing competence (nor at the moment, the energy and time) to polish my Luthien to a swirl-free finish--but I appear have found a way to remove the scouring caused by the Flex (and my incompetence) and at least make my car presentable. Can you guess what the solution is?

    I am disappointed, exhausted, discouraged, weary. Every muscle aches. I still have more polishing to do, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. Right now I am going to have a glass of wine and take an Advil. I had such high hopes for this spring detail, and now I have to settle for just surviving it.

    I do not know how you guys pack all this work into one day. I was ready for two days ... but three? Sigh.

    God is punishing me for my sins. I knew I should not have started this spring detail during Holy Week.

    I know the pains you are experiencing with the Honda Paint. I detailed a black honda fit and had the same problem.

    After a few threads asking about how to fix this problem I found a solution:

    I eventually ended up going M80 to Color X to M66. The light cleaners in the M66 cleaner wax was the only product which didn't leave holograms behind.

    I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.
    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

      How much pressure were you using? Speed is only 1 factor- pressure can play a huge role during the finishing process and during hologram removal.

      Working on the black Mercedes I recently finished I noticed I got holograms from M205 + Yellow Meg's pad + rotary. I went back over it with a FLEX, white pad, and the same M205 and it 100% removed the holograms. I would have used a finishing pad, but I somehow only brought one to the detail, so I reached for my white pad.

      I ran it at speed 4 and with moderate pressure for the first 2 passes, and then light pressure for the final 2 passes. Maybe give that a shot?

        You tried UC, SwirlX, and M205. Maybe you need to go with a less aggressive product such as M80, but i dont know.

                Do you have M82?

                Did you happen to use a test spot/door, or do the whole car already?

                  Here's the interesting part of the story. My car was in an accident last spring. The entire front end (hood and side panels) has been repainted. I did my first test spot on the hood. First I tried SwirlX with no improvement. Then I tried Ultimate Compound with minlmal improvement. Then ... I called Rasky ... and he encouraged me to try M105, which I was reluctant to try, given my inexperience. Finally, I relented and tried it and it worked well. So then I spent the next several six hours polishing the front end with M105. I then broke for a late dinner, took some ibuprofen, had a glass of wine, watched a little TV, and eventually went back out to the garage to do a test spot on the original paint, beginning with the driver-side door.

                  I then did a test spot on the driver-side door with the SwirlX with a polishing pad. It seemed to work well. Unfortunately, my Brinkmann spotlight had by that time run out of juice, so I had no way to confirm what I thought I was seeing. So I went ahead and polished the entire door and went to bed.

                  Next morning I went out to the car and was horrified by what I saw. I took a breath and recalled all the advice I have read on MOL. No problema. I'll just step down to M205. So I tried M205 with a polishing pad at speed 5. Worse. Then I tried M205 with a finishing pad at speed 5. No better. Then I tried M205 with a finishing pad at speed 4. The results you have seen. Then I tried M80 with a polishing pad. The results you have also seen. At this point I began to make my emergency calls!

                    Ok Akimel, take a deep breath!

                    First of all, the good news is that you have only done this to a single door. I have had this happen when I rush an entire car. THAT is reason for panic!

                    My advice would be to try the M80 on a finishing pad one more time, speed 4 or so, light pressure.

                    If still no dice, see if you can get your hands on some M82. M82 is less aggressive than M80, and quite a joy to work with. It's easy to remove (which will help to make sure you aren't marring during removal).

                    If you can't get the M82, I would think M09 would be easily and readily available.

                      I agree with Mark. I was going to suggest #9 as well and just read that Mark brought it up. I really like #9 and that just may be your ticket. So that and maybe a W-9006 pad with slow passes.
                      Too bad you're not down this way I'd lend a hand as I'm sure others would too.

                        Well, it's Good Friday morning, and I'm about ready to proceed into the garage and continue my polishing. I will be using my G110 instead of the Flex. I tried the G110 late yesterday, on the recommendation of Mike Phillips. The paint seems to be responding well to M205 applied by the G110. Last night I used a polishing pad. Today I will be using a finishing pad at speed 3. The paint is not swirl-free, but at this point my only concern is to make Luthien presentable. This ordeal ends today. Luthien will be waxed and ready to drive by late afternoon.

                          It is finished!

                          Somehow I survived the past three detailing days. I applied the first coat of wax today around 5:00 p.m. I did not achieve a showcar finish, but fortunately most folks don't carry Brinkman spotlights with them and therefore do not see the imperfections and defects that are so obvious to a person who spends time polishing his car.

                          My special thanks to Mike Phillips, Tim Lingor, Kevin Brown, and Rasky for their help and support when I hit the hard wall of soft Honda paint. Switching to the G110 saved my bacon. Perhaps one day I'll learn how to use the Flex properly with Berlina black, but it's nice to know that in the meantime I can fall back on the G110.

                          I did not achieve everything I had planned for this detailing session, but I think Luthien still looks great. Here's a peak:

                            Glad it worked out well Al. I didn't know you had a G110 at your disposal or I would have suggested that too.

                            Regardless, glad it turned out ok.

                            Since you aren't rushed, maybe now look at grabbing some M82 to finish the job later.
