I have to disagree, S-video will only support 576i, true HDTV requires at least 720p or 1080i.
I have been doing a LOT of reading today.

You guys do realize the "over the air" HD broadcasts are coming to an end here VERY soon, right?

Everything is going digital. So, while your antenna will do good for now, it won't here in just a couple of months.

I think it's over the air analog ending.

It will be digital broadcast but may or may not be HD.

I think you might be getting a little twisted around on this one... What will be ending is analog NTSC broadcast over the air.

Analog TV broadcast switch-off: Congress has passed a bill that requires over-the-air television stations to switch completely over to digital broadcasting after February 17, 2009. After that date, TVs and other gear with NTSC tuners will be unable to receive over-the-air broadcasts. Anyone who watches TV via "rabbit ears" or a rooftop antenna (as opposed to cable or satellite), and whose TV does not have a built-in or separate digital tuner, will stop receiving programs on that TV.

as of March 1, 2007, all new TV and video products imported into the U.S. or shipped to retailers that include an analog (NTSC) tuner need to have a digital ATSC tuner as well.

So, if your new HDTV has NTSC and ATSC tuners (which it likely does) you will continue to be able to receive HDTV for free over the air via your ATSC tuner.

HD will still be available over the air via:

• a built in ATSC tuner in your HD TV
• a coupon purchased converter box which converts the HD ATSC over the air to NTSC for your non-HD TV.

I hope this helps clear some things up. As with so many things government mandated they are well intentioned but, overly complicated.. like the tax code!

Now go get out all that old ChannelMaster antenna gear you have in the attic!

You are correct. However, at 37" it's hard to see a difference unless viewed side by side. At 50"-125" the difference is very noticeable. Considering that most of what is broadcast is either 480i/p or is an upconverted signal. You won't miss much with an S-Video cable. That said, I use Component video cables from my Sat box and DVD to the TV (65" Mitsubishi) with Coaxial digital audio cables going to the surround receiver. It's like 'being there'.

I have HDMI from my upconvert DVD which looks great on my 37". (looks great)
The best I can do from my sat box is S-Video. (fair)

right now I have mine hooked up like this. I am using fiber optic cables from both my cable box and my Hd DVD player. This all goes into my receiver which is decompressing signals and up converting it to 1080i which is connected to my Sony Bravia 42" HD TV, by component cables from the receiver to the tv.

Cool! Which receiver are you using that upconverts for you? I need to replace my Onkyo TX-SR800 so I can use use it for HD and HD upconversion. My 65" Mits on has one HD input.

Right now I am using a Denon AVR-687.
