  • Does easy detailing affect your new car decisions at all?

    Hey all...

I found this kind of funny and car crazy. The last time we bought a car was in 2004 and back then I wasn't completly car crazy. We were just at the Toyota dealership looking at the new FJ Cruisers and I caught my self saying, "Oh, don't want that, its going to be hard to detail." Its weird how your mind thinks, 3 years ago I couldn't care less, but now its the first thought in my head. I seriously looked at all the different models and was looking for things that would speed up or slow down the detailing process.

So I was wondering if any of you guys take the easiness of detailing a car into consideration when buying a new car?

Sort of. I don't like white or silver cars just because they don't show as well as black or some of the other dark colors.

I was certainly glad my 08 has easier to clean wheels than my 05 did.... I guess that was the icing on the cake for my decision.

Nope, not at all. The only thing I don't really like on a vehicle is a lot of black plastic cladding that's normally found on pickups and SUVs. Well, and on the MINI too. But since I'm not a truck/SUV guy it's really not an issue.

Like our Liberty...hahah! Yea, thats one thing I wish we would have gotten, but then again it adds to the whole look of the car, especially with the dark rims. Provides a nice contrast.

My wife drives a silver Honda Pilot which is pretty easy to keep looking good.
Well, last week I had to get a new car. If it was a year ago I would have opted for silver. I wasn't crazy about keeping a black car looking like I want. However, since joining this forum, attending a Saturday class and a couple of evening open garages, and getting a G100, I opted for a 2008 Honda Civic EX.... Nighthawk Black Pearl!
I am really exited about how great it looks and how Megs is going to help me keep it looking perfect!:

When I bought my C230 I bought silver due to ease of maintaining. It's my daily driver. The C230 looks great in black, but silver is much easier to maintain and also looks good.

I don’t think the easiness of detailing or detailing difficulties would make or brake a deal on what I would purchase. But, I certainly find myself thinking about detailing pluses and minuses when looking at new cars.

I would agree...however, the complexity of the wheels is something I will consider on my next vehicle...without the Safety tipped wheel brush, I'd absolutely hate my wheels...color ?, no not really...

My new car choice would always be affected by detailing parameters. Being in the business my customers always are first & maintaining my personal ride as a show case of my work is tentamount to keeping them first. It's time spent & results achieved, the easier the better for mine so I can do theirs.

Why not the Si? ( I think I may know the answer.)

I think it makes us more daring -- we dare to think we can keep a black one looking nice. Case in point, I just helped my daughter pick out her very first new car. She ended up with a black 2008 Honda CRV-EX. She's now been trained in the 2-bucket/grit-guard method and will soon get her first try with clay.

I kind of like it that my wife's car is silver. It gives me a little slack if I need it, what with 2 cars and a house with a lot of yardwork.

Re: Does easy detailing affect your new car decisions at all?

I wonder if lifestyle has to do anything with it as well. I know that were always doing something or going somewhere, so a dark colored car is more prone to problems. Another thing is that we are constanly going on road trips to places. In the last month we have driven to Arizona 3 times and back 3 times, up to Cal Poly SLO once and back, and to LA area about 4 times and back. So thats about 3,000 miles of highway driving in about a months time. Even though my moms car is dark, she insisted, its just not practical for us.

Another thing to take in to consideration is what type of car you have. For example, our F-150 gets used a lot to go to the dump or haul stuff around in the back and tow stuff. Can you image what the sides of the beds would look like if it were a dark colored car? Then the Liberty, we take that out about once a month to the desert, there is no way we could of gotten a dark colored car.

I don't know what the purpose of all that was but it just seems like our family doesn't fit the dark colored car scheme.

The only consideration I give to deciding is no light colors. Minimal cladding. Otherwise I have a open mind to any vehicle.

I understand your thoughts about practicality in your color choices. It makes alot of sense. But Your situations do not apply here. So thats why I gave my answer.

Besides the pebble textured plastic trim, don't like washing and drying s.u.v.'s as washing, drying, then doing all the paint care to the roof is a huge hassle involving a rubbermaid step stool to get up and down and up and down as you work around the roof for each step.

Wouldn't get another dailly driver in black, too much work for a grocery getter, now a special interest car, yes, would do black, but not a daily driver S.U.V.
