  • Anyone seen the new GT500?

Well, I was at my dealership getting my general electric module replaced (sound of growling person) and I happened to walk into their showroom. They had two Mustangs - one was a GT Convertible and the other was the ...........GT500!

I couldn't believe it. Both cars were painted in 'grabber orange.' The GT500 had been partially detailed and looked ok. Could have been better. But, still! We hardly ever get any exotic cars in E-Ville and this is really something special.

As for performance, the 5.4l supercharged engine should get you going pretty fast. Brembo brakes all around mean there is some serious stopping power. But, those wheels. Oh those wheels. The rears were FAT - they really crammed every bit of rubber under the fenders as they could!

I asked the guy basically watching over the car if I could take it for a test drive. He basically said that I'd have to buy the car to test drive it. Bummer...

So, has anyone else seen one of these? I really like the color and the price tag was a shocker. $45,000? That seems too low especially since this car is getting into Corvette handling and performance territory. Overall the car should be a big hit. The only thing I didn't like were the white stripes. They looked junky and seemed to be thick - it was clearly obvious that it wasn't in the paint.

Ive seen a couple on the roads. Suprisingly all old men behind the wheel. And your right about the rear tires. Looks really packed in the rear.

Seen one here locally. I thought it was junk. Looks like a tank, stripes were STICKERS, and they are way over priced in my opinion. Sticker is mid 40's but you won't be able to touch one for less than $60,000. Spend the few extra bucks and get a Z06. It will make the GT-500 look like a V6 Mustang. Even a stock C6 Corvette will beat out the GT-500 in virtually every category, even price. Just read the Car and Driver article. Later.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Base model Vette is 45,000 and it will slightly out acclerate and WAY out handle the Mustang. For that price, I would take the Vette by a mile, but the Mustang does offer room for four...

          Hey PorscheGuy,
sorry to go off topic here, but I saw you were from Indiana, Megiuars is planning on having a detailing class at Jimmy Buffits in the next month or so, I think an annoucement is coming soon. You should try to attend if your not too far away...

Re: Anyone seen the new GT500?

I certainly agree with the points made above about vette performance vs the GT500....afterall, I do own a vette.

What I do like is that the auto manufacturers are making cars like this. A 500 HP supercharged mustang....gotta love that! It gives the Ford/Mustang guys a great car to purchase. Just like us vette guys can go purchase a 505 HP Z06 Corvette. Great choices for all.

It's too bad that the dealers are stickin it to their customers with dealer mark up's (yes, I understand the whole supply and demand thing).

Re: Anyone seen the new GT500?

Alright, fine I'm a Ford guy and you guys are obviously Chevy guys. I understand that the Vette has overall better performance and I mentioned that in my original post, but everyone felt it necessary to trash the car...

Besides, Car and Driver is biased. Didn't they test a 997 Vs. a Vette? They 'claimed' the Vette was better, but why? The only thing the 997 didn't win was the acceleration test - driving is NOT all about acceleration. The 997 handles WAY better - no comparison, hands down.

The Z06 is definately a beast, but it is marked up sooo much!!! $70k???

This GT500 was NOT marked up. $45,000 takes it home.

The Mustang is meant to be more affordable. In this process, handling and acceleration will be sacraficed. If Ford was wanting to build an exotic, they would have. Just look at the Ford GT - can you say bargain super car?

I WISH!!! A summer job and detailing on the weekends doesn't ad up to $45K. Not to mention college next year- that'll eat through my savings!

But, I could sell the Expedition, Porsche, and my Sable, but on second thought, NO.

OK, here's a Mopar guy to chime in on what has become a Ford/Chevy discussion. Ford has a pretty decent package in the GT500, but the engine overpowers the chassis. Still, if you're a hard core Ford fan, the drool factor is super high!! But Roush did a far better job with their hopped up version of the Mustang. Sure, it doesn't make as much power, but they totally changed out the rear suspension and the car handles sooooo much better because of it.

As for the Z06 'Vette...................seriously, you guys have no clue how hard it is for me to say this......................for $70,000 you can't find a better package anywhere on the planet. Sure, there are plenty of other cars out there with more exclusivity, more mystique, more power, but not for anywhere near that kind of money. The only thing close is the Viper, but it's more a sledgehammer to the Corvette's scalpel.

Re: Anyone seen the new GT500?

It is very unusual for the GT500 not to be marked up. I've heard of one being sold in the Indy area for $74K. Z06 doesn't look so expensive then. Either the dealer is clueless or generous. More power to him for not marking it up. You should buy it. I'm sure they'll finance you. Sell it at a huge profit!

As far as acceleration, the base model 'Vette would probably outperform the GT500. It's a heavy car and all the 0-60 times I've seen are in the upper 4 second range, about where the LS2 Vette is. Of course the Vette is much lighter.

I have yet to see a GT500 in the Indianapolis area. They are rare in these parts and I'm surprised there would be two in Evansville. Other dealers will probably be contacting him.

I remember watching a Top Gear episode with the Roush Mustang and the GT500. I believe the Roush was faster around the track and they said it was the better of the two.

                              RamAirV1,

As much as I would like to buy and resell the Mustang, I can't right now.
                              1. I'm 18 and the most ludacris of lenders wouldn't give me a loan (and I don't want one) and 2. I don't know many people that would buy it from me.

Just for reference, there is only one in Evansville, but it is painted in 'grabber orange.' I have yet to see pictures of another GT500 in this color - the others seem to be mostly black or white.

I do have to agree with you about Evansville getting a car like this. There just isn't the market for them. For us, seeing a Benz on the road is about as exciting as it gets. There's one guy, Steve Chancellor of Black Beauty Coal, that could afford it. After all, he's got a Lambo Diablo VT Roadster that his wife drives to the movies, a Panoz Esperante that he got for Valentines Day a few years ago, and a Porsche Cayenne Turbo for his daily driver. Not to mention his F40 and Saleen S7!!!
