Question for the painters...

I have a few questions for those who paint. I'm going to be painting a boat by rolling on polyurethane paint. I would expect the process to be similar to that of painting a car. I've never painted before so this might be a stupid question. Once I lay down my basecoat, can I polish it and then put on clear for extra shine? Will it have problems adhering?
