If you are dealing with an engine that has MANY miles and is ancient, then a synthetic motor oil is not for you. Synthetic oil is able to squeeze into every gap and it will allow your engine to start to drip a little oil. If your engine already drips oil, the DO NOT use synthetic oil; it will create some really big problems. If your engine is fairly new, then synthetic oil is a huge benefit for you engine.
A lot of it is that with older vehicles, the seals have tiny cracks in them. A lot of the time with DINO oil, it won't seap into these cracks, or the sludge will rest in these cracks. When you switch to synthetic on an older vehicle, the synthetic's cleaning properties will pull that sludge out of the seals crack possibly letting it leak.

Synthetic oils also tend to soften seals too... so sometimes after it cleans it, it'll take a while to stop leaking.

what can i say, I'm mower crazy!

anyways I am thinking about running a few bottles of Lucas throught my engine before Honda changes my oil for the last time, so I will actually be changing to synthetic in about 5000k
Hate to break this to you, but gasoline automobile engines are four cycle engines. Engine manufacturers like Briggs & Stratton recommend 30 weight oil as well as synthetic oil, both of which are "automobile" oils. That's what the owner's manual says. Your Craftsman mower is powered by Briggs & Stratton.

I use mobil 1 10-30 in the Corvette and 5-30 in the Miata. Worth the investment.
Torco is a very good fuel additive that actually does boost your octane. I use 1/2 a bottle with every tank of gas in my Vette. Boosts me to around 94 octane. Several of my friends use it in higher concentration with their force induced cars that run high levels of boost.

Yeah, my Honda manual says to fill it with 10w30 oil. Since mowers are 4 cycle, you can fill it with oil you get at the auto parts store. My other Toro requires 30 weight oil which is a little more specific.

My truck was idiling really bad and my gas milege was terrible so a friend suggested me to try Guaranteed To Pass...i got it at advanced auto....this stuff is incredible..my truck is running great and the milege is up big time....it says to add to a full tank after every oil change but i do it about twice in that time frame...Its also good for helping your car pass emission tests for inspection....I would suggest everyone on here to give it a try ..its only about 8 bucks ,but well worth it..

I tried that stuff way back when I had a 91' Talon and could not pass emissions. I bought that stuff, still didnt pass, but it helped big time.

There are a lot of misconceptions about oil and fuel additives. First, synthetic and dino oils need addditve packages in order to perform. Any base oil without additives would ruin any engine in a short period of time. That is why motor oil companies add anti wear, anti scuff, anti foam, etc. additives. Oils are requiered to meet the standars of the API (American Petroleum Institute). Over the counter oil addtivies don not have to meet any standards. That is why car manufacturers do not recommend the use of oil addtives. (Liability issues). Like in everything, there are good, average and bad products. The same with fuel addtivies. For years the oil companies have claimied that thier fuels contain all the cleaning agents you will need. Suddenly they come out with a new "better" fuel (Shell V Power). If the old fuel had all the cleaning power you needed, how come now you need the better fuel? Just someting to think about...

You can buy 30 weight automobile oil anywhere, including Walmart.

                          mm i see
but don't the oils usually say 10w-30 or 5w-30? I don't think i have ever seen one that just says SAE30 (besides stuff that says its for lawnmowers)

I don't know a whole lot about oil but I am going to bet that you are right..so sorry my mistake

Here's the information from the Briggs & Stratton web page for oil recommendations for the Quantum 6.75 hp engine. That's what you have in your 21" Craftsman lawn mower.

                            Oil Recommendation

                            * SAE 30 40 °F and higher (5 °C and higher) is good for all purpose use above 40°F, use below 40°F will cause hard starting.
                            * 10W-30 0 to 100 °F (-18 to 38 °C) is better for varying temperature conditions. This grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption at 80°F(27°C) or higher.
                            * Synthetic 5W-30 -20 to 120 °F (-30 to 40 °C) provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.
                            * 5W-30 40 °F and below (5 °C and below) is recommended for winter use, and works best in cold conditions.

                            TYPE OF OIL TO USE

                            * Use a high quality detergent oil classified "For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher.
                            * Do not use special additives.
                            * Choose a viscosity according to the table opposite.

I use mobil 5w30 in my Dodge Ram. I change it every 3K since I only put around 10K on it a year. Dodge puts mobil 1 in their performance line, so I feel it is a good product to invest in. The truck does seem to run cooler on the temp guage.

I have used seafoam/deep creep combo on my wifes Stratus and it cleared up a rough idle. I have also used lucas fuel, but noticed no difference in milage.
