  • Why not to goto a 'fundraiser' car wash....

Don't get me wrong, fundraisers are a good idea and can help raise money for great causes but this shows you have to be careful when taking a vehicle to someone with little knowledge on washing a vehicle properly.

This is a post from another board:

Topic: Suggestions for CHEAP Car Wash Soap

I need to find a car wash soap for this Saturday's upcoming school car wash fundraiser. Budget is limited, here's what I have in mind:

    Simple Green, 140oz, $8.99

Dawn Original Liquid Dishwashing Detergent 90oz, $6.99

If I use either one of these products, preferably the Dawn, at a 1oz to 2 gallon dosage, would this be sufficient for car washing? Budget is LIMITED.

    TIA.

Here is another from the same post.... I hope its a joke:

Topic: Suggestions for CHEAP Car Wash Soap

I just use some windshield washing fluid in warm water. The -30 stuff that I currently have on hand has methanol and a bit of soap.

Windshild washing fluid??? Wtf . Don't they know that will leave spots and such(i don't think that is even good for the paint), i always hate that when i use it and next day you see the streaks from the sprayer on the hood.

          Besides the horror stories...

Lynn and I call these things,

"Scratch your car for 5 bucks!"

If you're driving by one and it's a cause or a program you support, simply drive into the parking lot, hand them $5.00 and then drive away.

You help out and no harm is done to your car.

by the way, while our daughter was growing up she was a Cheerleader and we helped to organize a number of different successful car washes, but dad made sure they went to his 20 minute school on how to wash a car without scratching it and I would strongly admonish the girls to bring me any car wash mitt that was dropped onto the ground and I would give them a new one.

Even though we tried to educate the girls on how to properly wash cars, for the most part these are kids and they just don't think like serious detailing enthusiasts, it's all about fun.

          Like I said,

If you're driving by a charity car wash and it's a cause or a program you support, simply drive into the parking lot, hand them $5.00 and then drive away.

Your car will thank you and you won't have to spend an entire Saturday undoing the damage inflicted.

You give a very good suggestion on the donation!

I set one of these up for my old primary school summer fete last year - I was the only one there, I had washmitts and water magnets, about ten buckets (so I could rotate and get two of them cleaned out after every car) and Meguiars Hyper Wash. Went very well, and some people asked me what I was washing with, and I took time to explain proper washing techniques to them (two-bucket method, quality shampoo, washmitts [one for upper panels, one for lower panels, one for wheels])...

We tried to set up an event at our local Halfords (car care store) when they rejigged there store in Dundee, an event to dmeonstrate proper car care and the use of the PC on demo cars, we'd demonstrate the Meguiars and Autoglym products the store were selling - the store told use they couldn't justify the £40 (roughly $70) to cover out travelling expenses!! Their loss...

Whats more shocking was I returned to that store the following week, picked up Megs Quick Clay and asked one of the staff what it was... "Its a new kind of polish" I was told... How do I use it I asked... "Ermmm...." was the response...

In the same way as we know automated car washes as "Swirl-o-matics"!

I helped my chruch do a car wash, so we could go to NOLA, lets just say Im glad I am apart of this forum, I had to teach everyone about washing a car properly, some were stubborn old men who claim that soap is just soap. But I went out adn bought all the necesities. It was fun seeing that I washed adn dried majority of the cars. we made $700 from 57 cars. One of my favorite cars that I cleaned was a 68 Camaro with a 454 swapped in. We did it all at a local Super Wal-Mart, I requested tents that we could use adn they said sure, and let us use quite a few of them. Wal-Mart is very fundraiser friendly they even doubled our money raised so it was around $1400 that we raised together, NOTE: I live in a tiny town with less than 10,000 people

just remember learn one teach one.

It's funny that there is a fund raising car wash right next door to my work today. Bunch of kids in swimsuits washing cars with rags and drying them off with bathtowels. I was thinking on how many people there getting their car washed are scratching the **** out their paint. And these kids still have some of their "bling" on their hands and arms as their washing. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great they are raising money for a cause, but have a bake sale...leave the poor car's paint alone. At least I give them money and enjoy what their selling. If anything, I will give them some money by just "walking" over there instead of drive.

Has anyone seen that Eagle One commercial that has been playing recently? The one where a younger guy drives up in a new Mustang and he sees two competing fundraiser car washes on different sides of the street. He is conflicted because on one side is a bunch of young, beautiful cheerleaders washing cars, the other side is a bunch of nuns. One of the nuns holding a sign saying "Car Wash" shows him a bottle of Eagle One and then the guy quickly pulled into that car wash.

Its much funnier when you see it. I get a kick out of that commercial every time its on.

Yeah, I saw that commercial. I thought it was hilarious too. Of course, I wouldn't go to either....only my hands and Meguiars touch my car.

                              It could be worse.

Apparently here in Southern California, a bunch of Girl Scouts did a car wash. They made the local paper for using Steel Wool SOS pads to remove bird droppings.

Now, that is scary. Assuming the bird droppings were removed before the clear coat, I cannot imagine the damage. My guess would be that wet sanding may be required to fix it.
