I'm on the same system with my Colorado which means an oil change every 6-7 weeks. Truck hit 111,111 on monday. Need to put my wife's Escape on the same program soon - probably at the 90,000 mark.

I usually order my filters online to save a few bucks and get the oil at Wal-Mart. Between their low price and the Mobil 1 Rewards program, I can do a complete 6 qt oil change for under $35. Local quick lube place wants $50+ for Valvoline semi-synthetic.

Axles and transfer case on the truck are filled with Amsoil.

Re: Which Motor Oil Do you Prefer?

The Rotella T Synethic oil line is very impressive. Due to its higher viscosity, the car feels like it lost a couple of horse power in the lower range of the powerband (yes I can feel the power loss in a race). It has the best protection in its price range according to oil analysis tests.

Royal Purple and Redline are the ideal choice for race cars, in my opinion.

Though, the oil for my daily driver is Mobil 1 Synthetic. It is the cheapest "mediocre quality" oil out there.

Also, there is a difference between "Full Synthetic" and "100% synthetic".

Whatever the dealer puts in my Dodge Cummins. I think they use Rotella but not sure. I just know it takes like 16 quarts.........

I use Redline 10/40 road, not race. Good stuff. Another good option is Bardahl XTC range with fullerene. Redline also make a lot of other good products. Water Wetter is good for the coolant system and the range of Si injector cleaners is good.

(The only Mobil1 synthetic available in europe is 0/40.)

Re: Which Motor Oil Do you Prefer?

What? you guys only have the 0W40 weight oil? That's a wide range of viscosity, suitable for many applications... but that is barely enough to meet OEM standards for a specific weight. I guess you guys don't have the ULEV standard either, right?

I am not sure the specifics about full vs 100%. A user by the name of roadrage on the s2k board mentions something that full synthetic has replaced 100% synthetic oil for cost. The term Full Synthetic is a veil to hide the fact that the oil is not 100% synthetic.

High-end oils like Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple are pretty much 100% synthetic. Amsoil boldly claims that their oil is 100% synthetic, while Mobil1 and others do not. I find it surprising that Redline no longer advertises its oil as "100% synthetic". That makes me wonder if they have degraded their products.

Re: Which Motor Oil Do you Prefer?

It's only Mobil1 that doesn't supply anything other than 0/40. Okay for more modern vehicles. I prefer to stick with 10/40 for my '93 civic.

I've got a couple of containers of recently bought Redline. I'll check what it says.

Amsoil and RP are group IV oils, and are true synthetics. Redline is actually a group V oil, which is ester based and also a true synthetic. Group V is the peak of the mountain, and you pay for it. Mobil1 is pretty much a group III, which is a hydrocracked oil (the lowest grade "true" synthetic). Pennzoil Platinum is a group III which costs less than Mobil1, but performs better. If any of the above have "degraded," it's Mobil1.

200,000 on my BMW 5 series running the basic Castrol GTX changed every 4-5,000 miles. Well actually it's BMW 15w40 but reality is that it is just rebranded. $2.89/quart and the car runs like a dream! That is just a regular old mineral oil, but a good quality one.

My favorite oil though is Royal Purple, but I just can't justify using it when the $3/qt oil works just fine for an old beater. If I owned a dream car of mine though, it would get Royal Purple all day long.
