I've been shopping for a set up. I'll probably just end up with a 'home theater in a box'. I've never had surround sound before. I was at a friends house watching a movie that has it and it was amazing.

That one looks too nice and fancy for me. But a heck of a deal for someone.

No such thing as "to nice and fancy".

Think of home theatre in a box as the armor all of audio. Looks fine from a distance, but just doesn't cut it. This would be perfect for you and the price would be like getting a G110 (used twice) for $40.00... a steal.

Nick's piece is amazing but the lack of HDMI connectivity is probably why it won't move.

This is true. And the reason I upgraded(along with 1080p video processing). But, for an entry level peice, this is a truely amazing product!

And you are correct about price. This is like buying a brand new G110 for $40.

It does upconvert and have the fiber optic inputs though. It is an absolute steal at $400.

Yes, although I have never used the upconver feature on this system, so I can't comment on how well it preforms.

As I was telling Nick the other week, I really have no where to put it until spring or summer, along with picking up a seperate amp long the way before using it.

So how long will this be usefull for? Will it still be usefull after a while, I only see 1080i on the description.. can it be used in the future for 1080p, or other HD signals?

I am sure the audio will always be fine... but since the video runs through it, I'm a little worried about that since they seem to keep upgrading the video signals? (keeping in mind I dont know a whole lot about it)

You do not have to run video through it. I never did, and I was always very pleased with this unit. The ONLY reason I upgraded, is because I stepped things up a notch on the video side. I am now using a projector with a 106" screen. 1080p is needed now.

With smaller screens(I was running a 42" screen through a plasma), 1080p is not needed, in fact, I could not see a difference between 1080i and 1080p on a 42" screen. With the larger 106" screen that I'm running, 1080p is needed(for me).

Simply route all of your audio through the processor, then your video through to your display device. No need to run video through the processor, although you can, and 1080i is a fantastic image!

So I could still run my basic DVD player, old Xbox, etc to the processor, (not sure what FIOS TV runs at), then if the TV signal is 1080p just bypass the box with that lead.

Each source(Xbox, dvd) should have a video out, and an audio out.

Run the video to the display device, then the audio to the processor. All will be fine

Or, just run everything through the processor, and have it upconvert everything to 1080i. Chances are, this will be better image quality than if you are running a regular DVD player. Remember, a plain jane DVD player is only outputing at 480. Run it throught the processor, and it will upconvert it to 1080i.

                          Murr,

The fact that it doesn't have HDMI connectivity simply means you by-pass this unit as a video switch and go straight from your video output source (FIOS, DVD, Xbox) into your tv. You can still connect them all to the receiver for audio purposes and looking at this unit, it is pretty future proof. I'm sure you'd be happy with it for at least 8-10 years (and at that price, maybe longer).

I bought my first high end receiver (an Onkyo) about 10 years ago and it lasted me 9 GREAT years and I recently gave it up for another Onkyo which ran me about 5 times what Nick wants for this Sherwood, but I'm hooked and I'm sure you will be.
