  • Swirl X leaves swirls/scratches issue...

Hey all, I just registered here but I'm not completely new to this. I read a lot of stuff on here and whatnot.

I recently got a new (but used, new to me) car and I noticed it had some light scratches/swirls, pretty typical for a car of its age (1.5-2years).

It's a black car and it's my first so the swirls are pretty horrid...my other cars were brighter and I never cared much for the swirls.

Anyway, I ran into a small problem and I think it's in my technique. Long story short, here's what I did:

-Wash car (Optimum No Rinse method...not allowed to rinse with a hose here)
-Claybar car (Meguiar's smooth clay kit)
    -Swirl X

I used a yellow foam Meguiar's applicator by hand for the swirl x. I went over a 10"x10" section i taped off on the hood. I used medium to strong pressure with the pad and worked in every application for about 3-5 minutes in circular and straight strokes. I did 3 applications of swirl X. I worked the product in until it started to dry and thin out like a thin coat of wax should look like. Then I wiped it off with a MF towel.

Good: It removed most, if not all of my medium/deeper scratches. Nothing fingernail deep but deep relatively. Or large rather.

But then upon closer look, especially with a flashlight, I noticed there are tiny tiny scratches that were not there before. With a flashlight, there are enough for them where it makes the finish seem hazy almost. From about a foot or more away, the paint looks amazing in sunlight and all that. But once you get up real close (im talking 3-4 inches from your nose), you can see the super light scratch marks.

I tried another portion of my hood, clearly seeing taht there are medium scratch marks with clear and clean areas of paint all over. I did the 3 coats of swirl X, and again, the medium scratch marks are gone but there are now hundreds of tiny scratches.

Is this normal? Am I working in the product too hard? I was under the impression that swirl x did not need to be followed up with anything finer..if it makes a difference, this is a Ford clearcoat.

Maybe I need a different applicator? I stopped altogether, quick detailed the car and threw on some NXT 2.0 and called it a day.

I'm pretty confused here. Any and all help/advice is welcome! I really want to get the finish clean if possible by hand. If a DA is required...then I might just forget about the whole thing together since I'm not THAT invested in the detailing ordeal.

    EDIT:

Yes, everything was clean. In fact, everything I used was brand new out of the packaging from meguiars from towels to applicators to the wax and swirl X. Only non meguiars thing was ONR and that's besides the point. Thanks guys!

It sounds like you may be working the product too long, or possibly be needing to lighten up at the end.

Did you check after 1 coat? or 2? It may be the first coat needs worked in well, and the second applied lightly.

Also, if working till dry, you will just be dragging foam around, which can cause swirls.

Did you launder the microfiber towels before using them?

I would try going over the same area again with SwirlX, but perhaps not using quite as much pressure. And do not work it until it is almost dry--you always want to ensure that the surface has sufficient lubrication. My guess is that you will be able to remove the micro-scratches you are seeing.

And my compliments on doing a TEST SPOT!

hmm...that's possibly. I threw the towels into the washer with some no-dye no-scent no-nothing detergent, i washed on hot and let it air dry out.

How wet should it be? I notice it's very gritty and watery when it first comes out...almost looks like cement in terms of consistency. When is time to stop? When it starts to look like just-applied uncured wax?

Using less than 2-3 applications leaves the medium scratches in...maybe i need to ease off the pressure.

        Thanks guys! Will try.

Grittery and watery? That sure doesn't sound like the SwirlX I know. SwirlX should have the consistency of toothpaste. Maybe not quite that thick, but it you get the idea. It certainly should be neither gritty nor watery. Did you shake it up real well?

If the shaking up doesn't improve it, then you may want to take the bottle back to the store and exchange it for another bottle. Or call Meguiar's consumer service.

It sounds as though your paint is fairly delicate so your relatively aggressive use of the product is causing some haze. That can happen quite easily when hand applying a paint cleaner on paint like this, but it's also fairly easy to correct.

If you're using 3 applications of SwirlX to correct the defects in the paint, then on your final application ease way up on the pressure and work the product quite lightly to finish off. That ought to dramatically reduce, or totally eliminate, the hazing. If not, an easy application of ColorX will almost certainly do the trick. Besides, you do need to wax after using SwirlX anyway, and a mild cleaner wax like ColorX does an outstanding job.

Give a read through our article on The Challenge of Delicate Paint as it will probably help you out a bit here.

                Thanks for the responses guys!

I thought Ford would have a pretty hard clearcoat, I guess not.

Michael: thanks for chiming in, I've read tons of your super helpful posts! Let me get this right, Swirl X won't remove the wax that's on the car? What about Scratch X 2.0? I'm a huge fan of Scratch X because I used a bottle to remove some serious hazing on a carbon fiber hood and it was unbelievable. When I saw the abrasive chart of the products though, that's when I picked up some Swirl X since I was quite surprised how abrasive scratch X is.

akimel: it's kind of like toothpaste but a little more watery i'd say. It's definitely pasty but I feel and see that it's wet when I first apply and it dries out.

I'll have to try this over the weekend or something. Is the yellow foam pad the pad of choice for this? I also have the meguiar's microfiber pads...i just don't like how the microfiber covering folds on itself when I use it. It's basically an MF towel around a foam pad from what I can tell.

Some may, some may not. Can change by year, model, color...

Yes, SwirlX will remove wax. As far as product strength, assuming worked in well, it would go:

                  ScratchX 1.0
                  SwirlX
                  ScratchX 2.0
                  Ultimate Compound

However, keep in mind we are still in safe products here, and working by tends to make them even milder.

I found the same thing. I like to stick with the plain foam.
