  • swirls/residue on black car after using Ultimate Compound

    Hi everyone,

I have a black 2006 Cadillac XLR-V. I used the Ultimate Compound to get rid of some scratches and I don't know if I let the Ultimate Compound sit too long or if I used too much but I have swirls all over my car that maek the paint job look nasty and dull.

I immediately washed the car again but the swirls are still there.

What can I do to the Ultimate Compound residue off of my car?

    Thanks for reading this

Rub some more Ultimate Compound on the effected area and it will liquify the residue. Do not let it dry though. Like removes like.

What interests me is that you say you let the Ultimate Compound sit. Paint cleaners are not to dry on the paint, only waxes/sealants. Give this a read through: http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39264

Thanks Cooper...Ughhh I know now that I shouldn't have let it sit...but it still bothers to use more of what I'm trying to get off the car...to get it off the car.

Mequiar's should make a product called dummy remover for people like me that easily corrects user errors LOL

You could also try some Quik Detailer and see if that liquifies it for you.

Thanks Coop. The car is at the dealership getting brakes and tires ( --> $$$!!!) when I get it back I will try the Quik Detailer first, if that doesn't work I'll try more Ultimate Compound unless you come up with an even better idea.

Either way I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all your help.

You could try washing the car and see if that removes the residue, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

            Other possibilities:

            (1) After washing, wipe down the car with a 50/50 IPA-water solution. Use the 91% alcohol that is easily found at local drugstores.

            (2) After washing, wax the car with Cleaner Wax or ColorX. The cleaning agents in either one should remove the dried residue. Do a test spot first before applying it to the entire car.

            (3) As already mentioned, Ultimate Compound or SwirlX will remove the dried residue. Apply with a foam applicator. You probably won't need to apply a lot of pressure. REMOVE IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT ALLOW IT TO DRY. I guess you already learned this lesson.
Swirls hide in the black molecular depths, only waiting for the right time to emerge and destroy your sanity.

Try M205 - it works great after UC or M105. Same rules apply - don't let it dry up - wipe it as soon as your done and work a small area (2 ft x 2ft) at a time.

Re: swirls/residue on black car after using Ultimate Compound

Did you apply the UC by hand or with a DA? If by hand, what sort of applicator did you use? Terry cloth can be quite aggressive and we often see this material cause marring to the paint, and sometimes quite severe marring at that.

If you really do have some left over UC on the paint, applying a small amount of fresh product to a small area and then wiping it off almost immediately should remove what's there.

Let's find out a bit more about your application process, though, and see if we can't help you fine tune that a bit.

I have been like a total noob trying to use 105 with a DA and more than once have sprayed the stuff everywhere. The dummy remover that has become my good friend is Optimum No Rinse at 16:1 concentration, which is their quick detailer concentration. It has been great for removing spatter as well as removing the product when it dries on while I am applying it, which it also is doing a lot for me. I don't know what I would do without it.

Can't help but reinforce what akimel, Wxman and Mike Stoops have stated - DO A SMALL TEST SPOT before using the technique on the entire car.

The 10-15 min spent on a test spot has saved me HOURS because it allowed me to confirm whether or not the technique (compound/pad/machine) was effective.
