  • Which line of car car products has the most shelf space at Wal-Mart?

We have a super Walmart in our area that has a fair selection of Meguiars products, enough that it is worthwhile to check out what they have every time I go there.

I went there yesterday with my daughter. No liquids I needed, though I picked up a California duster with a purple handle hee hee and a wheel brake dust brush, but I also decided to look at which brand's products had the biggest shelf space there.

Maybe you can guess... Turtle Wax and Armour All. And it wasn't just Turtle Wax waxes and Armour All protectant, I mean they had the whole gamut of products. They had their own car wash shampoos, glass cleaners, compounds, waxes, metal polishes, interior cleaning products, you name it, they had it.

And I think to myself, okay, I had heard of Turtle Wax by maybe 45 years ago, and I had heard of Armour All by maybe 35 years ago, and I don't remember having seen any marketing for those products since then (of course that may depend on what I read and watch but still...)

They undoubtedly don't have the best products, just a recognizable name.

So I have hopes for Meguiars running national ads and becoming a recognizable name. If you only advertise on a show called "Car Crazy" which not even I have watched (because in truth, I am not a car crazy person, just someone who wants to drive a car that looks nice) you will be recognizable to some, but why not let other people at least know that you exist, and maybe even that you might be a better choice than Turtle Wax and Armour All.

I've been wanting to post about this for some time. I actually noticed the opposite: Meg's products getting a big push at my local Wal-Mart. It all happened about 1 or 2 months ago with a big push of the NXT products. At the same time, Wal-Mart stocked a few of the end-caps with old soaps and some of the older Meg's labels, assumedly to move out old inventory. I would say at my local Wal-Mart; Meg's has the majority of the car care products, with Armor-All, Turtle Wax, Eagle One, and Mother's splitting the difference. When other customers enter the aisle and debate with each other about what to buy (usually couples) I find it very difficult not to try and sell them the Meguiar's stuff haha. I try to stay out of other people's business, but I have to bite my tongue so hard when I see you pick up that can of Turtle Wax and Armor-All aerosol.....

I was really hoping I would find Meguiars Aluminum and Magnesium polish. I think Mothers had some, Turtle Wax did. I envy you if your Wal Mart has more Meguiars than anything else. Ours had Deep Crystal car wash on sale for 2.50 for 68 ounces. I honestly think the name recognition is the problem, at least in this neck of the woods.

Unfortunately.. Walmart being one of the biggest retail giants (they have power), can dictate what they will pay and carry on their shelves. If you notice, they will carry their brand of products (brushes, etc,) and pay probably close to nothing for them, so they do not have to not have to go through another party (they go straight to the source) and get more profits (they are all about pricing things cheap and moving more out). This is probably one reason/example why the Gold Class accessories never took off, which was a shame.

Around here, Walmart has actually reduced the Meguiar's shelf space. They don't sell Gold Class car wash anymore, so now I have to buy it way overpriced at Canadian Tire. CT sometimes have what they call a "sale" and the GC price is what it was a year ago (and what WM sold it for a few weeks ago).

When buying stuff, it's sad to be Canadian.

As of the end of 2009 (and through the first Q of 2010) Meguiar's enjoys a larger share of the care care market than any of our competitors - as recently published in the Orange County Register that market share currently runs at 20%.

Our business with WalMart has grown tremendously in the past couple of years, but even then there is somewhat of a regional component to specific store shelf space. While every WalMart store has access to the same product mix as every other WalMart store, they may not always stock everything. If a specific Turtle Wax product, for example, has proven to be a huge seller for a specific store it's no wonder they dedicate shelf space to it - it sells. But what sells well in KC may not be the biggest seller in Miami, which could be very different from what people in Dallas want.

Heck, I was talking to a young guy who works at a local O'Reilly store here in SoCal and does some detailing on the side. We talked about what he uses, how he works, etc. and I mentioned Ultimate Compound to him. He'd never heard of it so I brought him a bottle to try out, but I double checked first whether O'Reilly had picked it up or not. Sure enough, they had - but his particular store was not stocking it for whatever reason so he'd never heard of it.

I've been somewhat impressed with Wal-Mart's Meguiar's products. They have just about all of the consumer line on the shelf.

I also noticed they sell the Karcher pressure washers and accessories, and they have a 'high-end' wax in a box.. AutoGlym for $35.00.

Target does not really have as many Meguiars products IMO. I usually go to Wal-Mart just to purchase Ultimate Wash and Wax, Deep Crystal Car Wash, Ultimate Compound, and Quik Interior Detailer.

The Deep Crystal Car Wash is on sale for $3.50, and a bottle of Quik Interior Detailer has been on sale for only $4 as well. I went up there this morning and grabbed a bunch of them.

I am a little upset that I can no longer get NXT Generation Car Wash OTC anymore. Pepboys was the only place I could find it and now they do not have it anymore.

Yeah, Target is very lacking in the car care department!

                    I feel your pain SKUZ.
I live in Calgary Alberta and the WalMart in my area no longer stocks Meguiars products at all, Tons on Mothers and Armour All stuff.. I walked in to WalMart last week and they had a large clearance section with 8 large Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash 64 oz for $5 each. I snaged them all up, I could not resist.. and 2 NXT 2.0 bottles of wax for $7 each I bought them as well. Yes Canadian Tire has some specials on Meguiars products but even on sale it was always more the the Evil WalMart LOL.. Our Canadian $ is on par so I just Order from The States.

Good to know about the Walmart clearance Big Pete. I'll have to swing by the Edmonton Walmarts soon.

Canadian Tire has aligned themselves with Simoniz. I see more and more Simo products in their flyers, and less and less Megs. Wal-Mart is going more in the Armor-All direction. It really ***** to be Canadian when it comes to finding top quality auto car products.

I gave up looking for NXT wash OTC anymore. Although I did see some at NAPA a few days ago and they had tons of dust on them.

I have found that most auto parts stores carry a decent selection of polishes includings some Megs stuff. I would try a few and you'll probably find a few.
