  • Color X question

Is it necessary, or beneficial to apply wax after using Color X? Suppose it wouldn't hurt, but would it beneficial? This would be on a daily driver, and on my vette, which isn't a daily driver.

ColorX is a fantastic product - no doubt about it. I guess the only drawback to ColorX as a wax is that it came about before the addition of Hydrophobic Polymers - like thos found in NXT 2.0 or Ultimate Quik Wax spray wax.

If you want the ultimate protection AND water sheeting properties, throwing a thin coat of NXT 2.0 on there after the ColorX wouldn't be a bad idea.

Either way, you should be fine.

Also depends on how often you rewax. If you rewax every 1-2 months, probably no benefit (although it certainly wont hurt). Applying a different carnuba (DC3, #26) probably has zero benefit other than ensuring no missed coverage spots (which is why Meguiars and everyone suggests 2 coats of any wax).

If you go longer, then doing a second coat with a synthetic like NXT2 will give slightly longer protection (probably 2-3 months, but drastically depends on your environment and conditions). In effect you would be using ColorX for its cleaner and its polish/glaze as well as a first coat of carnuba wax, and then NXT for increased durability as the final coat of wax/sealant. NOTE that you dont get double the protection, the NXT probably removes much of the ColorX carnuba, but the end result is a guaranteed full/even coat and mostly NXT2 synthetic (slightly longer protection).

So, add NTX2 if you like, or use ColorX alone (for 1-2 months of "typical" carnuba protection).

How about topping it off with GC?

Sure, could, but GC is mostly carnuba (a little polymer). I would suggest stick with the ColorX (2 coats) and keep it simple, or do 2nd coat with NXT2.

Nothing wrong with GC if you want to do that.

I would think (could be wrong) that doing another coat of Colorx would strip the previous off since it does have some good cleaning ability.

To the OP - You can always apply Colorx, and then the following week after you've washed and dried the car, apply Nxt2.0 or GC.

Yup, true. But since wax cannot be layered, the only reason for the second coat is to ensure there are no missed or thin spots in the first coat. Anywhere the second ColorX removed the first coat, that second coat would be there. Anywhere the first coat was missing, the second coat would cover that spot. So, the only reason for a second coat of GC is to ensure full/even coverage, you cannot get extra thickness. That is why a second coat is recommended but highly optional (and probably 50% of consumers dont do it). Really just a little extra insurance (and just barely worth it). Even without cleaners, much of the same applies just trying to apply a second coat of pure carnuba (DC2 or #26), all you actually get is a little more insurance that there is coverage everywhere, but *NOT* extra thickness.

Doing a Second coat with NXT2 is a little more interesting. Same even coverage logic, but since you cannot layer wax(s), you will end up with some sort of partial-carnuba and partial-synthetic coating. Whatever amount of NXT2 is added (or replaces carnuba) the result will be a little more durable protection.

Yup, I often do this. I apply one wax initially, and after a few washes I re-wax using a different wax - to "mix" the result.

I personally usually do an initial detail (wash+clay+cleaner+glaze) and wax with NXT2, wait 4-12 hours and then second coat using #26 carnuba. I then wash weekly, with UQW spray touchup (with its synthetic polymers). Every month or so I re-wax, typically alternating between NXT2 and #26 throughout the summer.

Whatever works for each person, since maximum wax beauty really *IS* largely in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, ColorX topped with NXt or Gold Class would be a great quick detail.

                        Removing is usually MF.

I like to apply with a foam applicator, but terry could be used if you needed more bite.
