  • Hot Shine Tire Liquid Spray Questions

Hello, I just gave my new car it's first (by me) hand wash yesterday. In the past I have always gone to a car wash, but figured I would treat this car better than i have other cars in the past. It was about 45 degrees up here in the northeast so it was about as good as winter weather gets for cleaning a car outside. Everything was going fine until I went to use my High Gloss Hot Shine Tire Spray. I adjusted the nozzle but it got very windy very quickly and I ended up getting overspray all over the place. I noticed light splatter even on the rear window! I ended up wiping up as much as I could with the chamois I had just used to dry the car, but I did not just rewash the car. In hindsight, I'm wondering if I should have rewashed the entire car. How easily does this product damage paint and/ or the clearcoat? I also noticed there was a run off onto the rims after I wiped up the excess but was in such a rush (wife yelling at me to take kids to birthday party) I didn't have a chance to thoroughly clean the rims after. I guess I am very worried about possible damage to my new car. The only thing I can find about this topic online is people saying how tire shine products have damaged or even stripped their paint and damaged their driveways. Any quidance to make me feel better would be appreciated. In the future i will definitely spray a cloth and rub it on!

    Hello, and welcome to MOL!

You really shouldn't have any lasting issues from a bit of Hot Shine overspray onto your paint, but for piece of mind you could just give the car a good wipe down with Quik Detailer and a couple of microfiber towels rather than giving it a full rewash. That should effectively remove any Hot Shine from the paint, windows, etc.

Thanks! I went over the immediate area with a chamois to wipe anything up. 6 hours later when I finally got back home (keep i mind the tire shine was still wet on the tire since it is 40-45 and humid in my area) I ended up washing the areas with a microfiber mit and some clean warm water to make sure - otherwise I would not have been able to sleep.

I have found that I like to take an old terry towel, and sort of dab/press around the tire after the dressing has sat for a while, to try to pick up excess.

I also spray on the tire dressing and let it soak for 5-10 minutes then wipe the tires of any excess solution.

Another thing you can do to prevent or minimize overspray from aerosols on your tires, is to use a piece of cardboard and bend it in the shape of the contour of the wheel and hold it inward while you spray.

Thanks fro all the advice guys. I will most likely use the cardboard method going forward. Has anyone ever damaged their paint with this stuff though? Mike from Meguiars has already done a great job comforting me from yesterday's debacle. But I was just wondering if any of the scary stories are true?

                No, it wont damage.

It is kind of dirty, so if it sat on there a while, you may need a mild paint cleaner to remove the stain, rather than just QD. But nothing damaging.

Hang around detailing forums, or just car forums in general, and you'll hear all kinds of horror stories. Most of them are either urban legends or someone using the wrong product on the wrong surface. Even then, it's extremely rare that a product does serious damage to something. Probably the most common is the use of a stong acid wheel cleaner on bare, high polished aluminum wheels - that will cause a big problem in a big hurry.

Just make sure to avoid spraying aerosols or fine mist trigger spray products when it's windy outside. But then, you've already learned that lesson!
